Cars

How many cars do you have and do you carpool? Many public transportation systems will provide information about other commuters going the same way as you. I'm wondering if those who don't walk to a close mall or store, share a ride when possible, or take the bus or train and have multiple cars in one family still complain about gas prices. I guess an equivelant questions in the US is - do you vote - and if not - do you still complain about the way things are are?

I own two cars, an Acura Integra and a Nissan 300ZX. I love driving, but carpool when I can, although the situation doesn't present itself too often. Believe it or not, public transportation isn't the greatest thing in the world either. Buses and shuttles constantly running without an adequate amount of passengers sucks up just as much gas as a person driving him or herself, or even more. Gas prices generally have much more to do with political conditions and tensions. Oh, I do vote, but one of the great things about the world is that it's not a crime to complain about something, whether it be gas prices or politics.

That's true, not a crime at all. My point was just that its really funny when people complain about something when they have it in their power to do something about it. Like those who complain about gas prices. Of course they're free to do so, and I would always uphold an individuals right to do so. I was referring to saving money on gas not how much gas the buses suck up. However, I'll answer that first. You answer my arguments about public transportation, if more people used it (although in the states I live in, buses are almost always crowded) it would so help the environment. Obviously the environment and saving money isn't a good enough reason for them, so maybe there should be more incentive for these people. Maybe more business' giving them metro cards and the like. Although quite a few business seem to already do this. I guess I was talking more in my discusion about cutting down on the price of gas, which taking the bus certainly does, however it also helps the environment. Even places that don't have constantly full buses, have peak hours where they're very full - usually - and I believe this offsets the off peak hours. Peak hours will have you standing like a sardine. On buses and on the subway. And beyond saving money, its a really great thing as many people don't drive. The elderly, students, those who can't afford cars, those with physical or mental disapbilities. It provides an alternative to walking when the distance is too great. And of course, for those young people, and sometimes older people who drink, it provides a responsible alternative to getting in their cars and driving when they're impaired. Did you know that many public transportaion organizations like Ride On in MD and others will offer a match up system for carpooling. People going in the same direction for work or school at the same time. I think this is such a great idea. Many people in MD will leave their cars at the metro station and ride the rails. Not only do they save money - and time, on both gas and parking downtown, they can use the time to get work done, or read a novel, things they can't do so easily when driving. Although many try. Many use their cars as offices (with calls), restaraunts and beauty parlours. Anyway, I'm glad you stopped by my discussion. Hope you had a good weekend. Have fun mylotting.

Interesting questions artemis! We have one running vehicle. The oldest son is bringing a vehicle home for himself this weekend. We hope to get a second vehicle for our use in the very near future because our car only seats four people. That will make 3 vehicles in one family. We do not carpool. There is no one lose enough to carpool with. We do not have public transportation here so that is not an option. The nearest mall is a full hour drive from here, the nearest K-mart is a 1/2 hour drive from here, the nearest store of any kind is a gas station/convenience store 4 miles away. I believe people like us do have the right to complain about the gas prices because we have no choice but to pay them. We have no alternative means of transportation and "They" know it. "They" have us backed into a corner. Should we quit going to work? to school? for groceries? I think not. To answer your equivelant question...Perhaps the voter turnout would be higher if we had some one worth while to vote for. It makes very little sense to vote for someone who will not do us any good anyway.

I always loved your answers!!! Especially the last - not exactly my point - but soooooooooo true in our current situation. I like that the reason you're getting a second car is that it only seats four people - which means your second car - even if only used for family will kind of be used for carpooling. That's a lot of people in one car!

I have a car and a scooter. I use it for going to office. But whenever possible, I prefer I going by 'Metro Rail' to my office. It is very convenient and it saves us from traffic hasseles and nuisance. I agree that more and more public transport should be used to save fuel such as Gas, Diesel and Petrol. But I find that people believe in pomp & show and they do not go for car pool. I find it very disgusting when I see that one man is driving a huge big size car...and no one else is sitting in the car. I feel how much fuel is wasted in this manner. But people who are rich...do no bother about the State or country. An excellent post! Have a great Day! I sent you a PM, but I have not received any reply??????? Deepak

I dont have car, but before we have FX. But we sold it because nobody is using it because of high amount of gas. I dream of having my own car and I wonder how am I going to achieve it. We have garage in our house because of that old FX, and now that garage stand as play area of the kids. I love to commute because I can sleep during the travel period... lols.

What about the rest of the thread - do you carpool when you can...do you use public transportaion or walk to things close by? Will it be expensive for you for gas if you get her another car?

Sorry, I don't have a car yet, it's not that convenient and rather expensive to drive a car in my city, I'd rather to take the subway, which is really convenient and cheap. Andy

I live in Tampa, Florida, so I dont really need a car with the public transportation available. Thus, I dont have one. I lived in Ohio before and had one car. It was good on gas, so I never complained about gas prices. It's kind of nice not having to worry about a car anymore, but not as convenient.
