Have you ever had tough and thick hair?how to soften your tough hair?

My hair is tough and thick. It didn't lay down smoothly even when it has been long, esp. when I wake up. I need advices to deal with it. I want it long a bit. Not always like basketball players just as I was. so have you ever had the some problem as my hair,do you have a way to soften tough hair?

Ive always had very straight and thin hair. Both my sisters have very thick hair. Every night on eof my sisters wahses and conditions her hair. Then she puts it in a few pony tails around her hair. It makes it a little easier to manage and is smoother.
