Why does a wedding ring have to be so fancy?

I've been wondering why all the wedding rings i look at are always so over the top either in look or worse, in price. What really qualifies these chunky gawdy hungs of metal and rock as wedding bands? Isn't it supposed to just be a symbol of your commitment to your partner and such? What makes a ring a "wedding" ring? The coolest rings i have seen have actually been pretty darn cheap in comparison to anything with the "wedding" label. Silver, platinum or white gold... i like the silver look.. with amythyst stone... if any diamonds at all, they have to be VERY small, just to add a bit of sparkle. Why does a ring supposedly have to be three months income for the groom. That's insane, it seems like such a silly thing to spend so much money on. So tell me, what do you think about wedding rings and the like. :)

I prefer plain bands or perhaps just with little diamonds in them. I know sometimes they can be dear, but you have to wear it for the rest of your life and it has to be good quality and durable. I will be going for a plain band

That's another question of mine, why can't you just change it after it gets to worn? :) It would last a long time, but it'd be neat to switch it up every few years or so lol
