Have you ever had to use crutches?

I had a bad episode of arthritis in my left knee. The Doctor gave me crutches to walk with for two weeks. They are the most awful things to use. I am not supposed to put pressure on my armpits, but since I really do not know how to properly use the dang things, my armpits hurt!! My partner bought me a cane to use, which helps tremendously. No more hurting my armpits. Have any of my fellow myLotters ever had to use crutches? If so, what do you think of them? PEACE

I have needed crutches many times, but I have never been able to use them properly. So, I am safer getting along without them.

I didn't experienced using it, since I haven't had any injury that requires to use crutches. But I always try some of them, it does hurt. But I think it only hurts the first times, since I've seen others who got used to it. They also put some cushion on those bars that are placed under arms, to lessen pressure on their armpits. I hope that you recover fast though, a little oil massage on that arthritis of your's would do some help!;)

Any massage oil can do, since I believe that it produces heat and it relaxes your muscle while you massage it.

Surprisngly I've never had to use crutches. I've hurt my ankle twice, the second time I did so, it was a really terrible sprain that took months to heal, and the pressure I put on it when walking also was not fun. I thought that I would have to need crutches when I went to get my ankle checked, but they just sent me home with an icepack. I spent a few terrible weeks hobbling around on it until it started to feel so much better. I still had about 6 months to go before it really started to feel better. I think crutches would of helped me greatly, but I think they would have been a huge burden.

OUCH!! Sprains are sometimes worse than breaks because they can put the breaks in walking casts. Not much can be done for a sprain except ice and resting the foot. It sounded like you suffered for a while. I do hope you have no pain now. PEACE

You need to get lessons in learning how to use crutches. They should not hurt your arm pits..if you are leaning on the crutches with your arm pits then stop doing that. If you are not doing this, then the crutches are too long. You need to adjust them or get shorter ones. Go back to your doctor and get a lesson in them or have them send you to an physical therapist to learn the right way to use them. You can do permanent nerve damage to your arms if you use them wrong.

An aid at the hospital gave me a lesson...albeit a very short and uninformed one. The cane my partner bought me is working just fine and does relieve the stress on my knee. Thanks for the info, though. PEACE

I have had to use crutches before so I do know about the sore armpits from the crutches. My kids have also had the same experience too. What I do is take a nice soft hand towel and wrap it around the top of the cructch and tape it, it will give it extra cushion help with the armpit area not getting so sore. Hope this helps and hope you are feeling better soon :)
