Aspergers Syndrome

I have a 5 year old son that was diagnosed autistic at 16 months of age. After much home therapy and intensive early intervention therapy, he is now in a typical kindergarten class at an elementary school. My question is that now they believe he has aspergers. Does anyone have a child with aspergers and if so, what are some of their "characteristics" that they have. I see some things with my son that worry me. I hope that with continued work and effort, some may go away. I worry about his later years and having to deal with not so nice people that will tease and abuse him. Any input is much appreciated.

Aspergers Syndrome is in the Autistic spectrum. Most children with Aspergers are considered high functioning. Some avoid eye contact, have difficulty in social situations, have some behavioral outbreaks, etc. I have students at the prek whose main goal is to look at someone and say hello and goodbye. He will do so with prompting, is at an above average intellectual ability, but has the pragmatic difficulties. I also have students at the high school level and they are functioning well in regular mainstream classes, they just are a little more to themselves or they have to find that group of friends that accept them. Unfortuneately, kids with and without disabilites get teased. You just need to make sure that your child understands how to deal with them, because that is where the problems have the greater chance of happening. Good luck!

My son was diagnosed as mild Aspergers at the age of six. It's not something nice to have because he has an extra hurdle in life to overcome. Yet its not the end of the world. Did you seek professional help? They might guide you the best way to help you deal with your kid. Some of the characteristics of Aspergers.... 1) They tend to do more well with adults then with children their age 2) They excel in a particular subject and talk continuously about it. For example mine is technology fanatic. He likes Robots a lot. Other children might be interested in one of the followings cars, trains, French Literature, door knobs, hinges, cappucino, meteorology, astronomy or history. This interest usually leaves nos space for more age appropriate, common interests. 3) My child had speech difficulties which he has easily overcomed.
