Thankfully that hasn't happened to me and that would be pretty much impossible to do in Iceland. I'm not sure if someone could have been using my US social security number since I left the US almost 20 years ago but I'm pretty sure Uncle Sam would have sent me a friendly letter to remind me to file my taxes like he did for seven years after I left the US :).
Does this person using your SSN always work in the same place? Then it should be easy to ask the IRS or even the police to pay him/her a visit.
It's so unfair when something like this happens and it's up to you to prove that you didn't work there but not for the IRS to prove that you did. I hope whoever was using your SSN has stopped it now and that you won't have more problems with it.
