Why is it so dark outside? It's only six PM!

On the east coast, it's just past six P.M and already it's pitch black outside. Just thirty minutes ago, the sun was setting and the sky started turning pink and purple. And, an hour before that, the sky was ultra clear and sunny as if it were noon. It's weird to think that darkness and night can settle in so quickly. Most times during the summer, we like to go outside around six P.M, to enjoy the early evening. It's always so nice and cool. Not scorching hot, like the middle of the day. Most times during the summer and late summer it's daylight till almost nine P.M in our area. But now, it's getting way too dark at that time to even go outdoors. Maybe it's just me, but it seems as if it's getting darker much sooner this time of year. How early does it get dark where you live? Do you find that it's getting darker much earlier this year than it was last year?

I like the long warm evenings of the summer months. I don't like this time of year in my country. It is getting dark earlier than I remember last year. Every week the time it gets darks gets a bit earlier until the shortest day of the year in December. Then it will slowly change until the longest day of the year in June. It is not much fun going out after six in the evening, when it is cold and dark.

I think it is because we spent the summer being so used to it being daylight so much longer that the time change shocks for a bit and then we get used to it again. I dont think that it gets any darker any sooner than last year at this time, I just think that I forgot how quickly it can get dark. I got so used to the longer day that yesterday I went shoppping and when I came out to my car at what I thought was 8pm, but was really 7pm (forgot to set my watch back) I was shocked by how dark it was. Then I remembered we set the clocks back. It just takes some getting used to.

Morning beauty queen. Here I am in the east of China and it gets very dark at 5: 45pm. It has always been like this at this time of the year. It is all because of the spinning of the earth. But in the areas that are in the west part of China, it gets dark many more hours later. I was told by my colleague from Xinjiang that they are still enojying brightness or daytime at 2:oo in the morning. So it is naturally understandable to us because of that reason. Have a good day, dear beauty queen.

i guess it is because of the daylight savings time...we put our clock ahead one hour, so now it gets dark at supper time! (and i heard on the news that we are suppose to get some snow soon too! ugh!

Here in Ohio, we just had to set our clocks back an hour, so it's just after 6 pm here, and it's pitch black, too. I hate it. I don't get home from work until ater 6 pm, so I'm going to be wasting all my daylight hours at work, and driving home in the dark. I have to come home and take care of my animals in the dark, now. I think they just need to stop messing with the time. I'd much rather have a little light in the evening.

Ohh you bettcha!! We went off daylight savings time yesterday and am amazed that it is 5:30 and dark. By the time we reach the shortest day of the year in December it will be dark by 5:00 PM. We live in Southwestern Manitoba and at this time of year there is a growing sense that we are once again hunkering down for another cycle of cold, snow, blowing winds and short days of sunlight. But what are we going to do...other than go with it. No point in resisting what cannot be changed...and the one thing about the order within the Universe we know Spring follows winter and that is a look forward to during the coldest, darkest times...particularly in January. So nope, you are not alone on this one....turn on the lights! Cheers, Raia

I'm in the central time zone. it's 5:30 pm here and pitch black out. Welcome to late fall I guess. Dark at different times during the year. Just try and find something you enjoy early. I took my kid out once and watched the sun come up, she was up already. Then we went back to bed. Weekends are great. As far as last year goes daylight savings time was different then. So that may have something to do with it.
