I actually came across this a few days ago and maybe I'm venting here a bit, but this is just too much and was really, really uncalled for in my mind. It seems that in the city of Barceloneta in Puerto Rico, the city beefed up the no-pet clause in three housing projects, but in a really sick way. Here's an excerpt of the article: (Quote:) ..."Animal control workers seized dozens of dogs and cats from housing projects in the town of Barceloneta and hurled them from a bridge to their deaths, authorities and witnesses said Friday. Mayor Sol Luis Fontanez blamed a contractor hired to take the animals to a shelter."This is an irresponsible, inhumane and shameful act," he told The Associated Press. Fontanez said the city hired Animal Control Solution to clear three housing projects of pets after warning residents about a no-pet policy. He said the city paid $60 for every animal recovered and another $100 for each trip to a shelter in the San Juan suburb of Carolina. Raids were conducted on Monday and Wednesday, and residents told TV reporters they saw the animal control workers inject the animals. When they asked what they were giving them, they said they were told it was a sedative for the drive to the shelter."They came as if it were a drug raid," said Alma Febus, an animal welfare activist. "They took away dogs, cats and whatever animal they could find. Some pets were taken away in front of children."But instead of being taken to a shelter, the pets and strays were thrown 50 feet from a bridge in the neighboring town of Vega Baja, according to Fontanez, witnesses and activists, apparently before dawn Tuesday."Many were already dead when they threw them, but others were alive," said Jose Manuel Rivera, who lives next to the bridge. "Some of the animals managed to climb to the highway even though they were all battered, but about 50 animals remained there, dead."Rivera said he alerted officials, who spread lime over the animals' corpses to control the stench..." http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jnVM28pujsusIu2PeX7-zhySk87AD8S81DO80 Another version of the article is here http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21386121/ I mean, yes, maybe there was a no-pet clause in these projects, but isn't this going a bit extreme..to seize beloved pets commando style or as if a drug raid, snatch them away from the owners then instead of taking them to the shelter just to hurl the pets to their deaths? What kiind of sick crap is this? Can you imagine how those people must feel? How would you feel if the same was done to your pets? There is even a petition one can sign to the Governor of Puerto Rico http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/puerto-rico-pet-massacre

It is not going to have pet’s life back, but maybe will help in the future...isn't Puerto Rico part of USA? They should have the same regulations as all states..... I am looking at my sleeping and snoring pets right now. All are sleeping in my bed. My kitten is already over one year old. She is right next to me. Dogs are at my legs, taking at least half of my bed. I wish my pets to be safe forever; I would be very dangerous woman for anyone who tries to hurt them....

Yes, Puerto Rico is a part of US, so you'd think they would have the same pet regulations. I wouldn't exactly be "nice" to anyone who'd hurt my babies either!

How utterly horrible. Those poor animals and the owners. That is just so sick and cruel. They all should be arrested and put behind bars. What they did is just barbaric. What the housing projects should have done, is give a choice. Get rid of your animal or you get evicted. Eveyone in this situation is to blame. Well not so much the pet owners, but they did know the rules. Just the rest of the ones that did this terrible thing to those poor animals.

I don't know why the same pet rules aren't true there. I know here, that even in a place with a no pet-clause if you have a pet openly for at least three months that then the landlord has to allow for the pet. Technically speaking that is true in my building which has a no-pet clause but just about everyone does have pets. Yes, those people should have had the option of moving if they wanted to keep there pets, not to come in like stormtroopers and round up the pets like that.

That is so disgusting! How could they do that? It makes me so mad to know that there are such heartless people in this world. Someone needs to throw THEM over the bridge now, and be done with them. Maybe that's wrong for me to say, but it's how I feel.

If they had problems with pets population then it's their fault for not educating themselves on how to prevent it. If I had the money I would go there and throw these so called animal control workers to the bridge, because that way I can control human population. Anyone who can climb back up will be thrown back down. Let's see what this government will say about that.

Yes over pet population is a problem everywhere, but these were much loved pets by their owners. I think the common consensus here is that EVERYONE would like to see the people who did this thrown off a bridge..I agree

Dearest Goddess, how could someone do that--hurl animals off a bridge like they were trash. That is inhumane and unjust. Sure there was a no-pet policy, but that was a little overboard. Poor people and their poor furbabies. I can't imagine that happening to me, I would move before I let them take may furbabies. They are like my children and I wouldn't and couldn't be without them. I hate leaving them to visit family at Christmas.

I'd move too if something like that was to happen. The problem is, is that almost everywhere even here in American pets are "property" rather than a part of the family, so I guess the reason why such cruelty can exist.

There should be a way to stop such cruelty. Furbabies are not property, they iz family. I wish there were stronger laws here protecting pets.

This just made me sick to my stomach, literally! To take ppls' furry kids by force and kill them in such an inhumane way is totally wrong. I'm betting some children, specially the young ones, are mentally/permanently hurt by this now. (Couldn't think of the right wording at the moment.)

It sounds linke a horror story:(. I can't imagine that people can behave like this. It is horrible and should not take place. Even that no-pet policy is really sick. Maybe no-child policy would be next:(.

When I first looked at your discussion title, I read it as "Pet MASCARA" and immediately thought, "NOW what?" (Yes, I'm dyslexic but that didn't stop me from being a typesetter with a 98% accuracy rate.)

This is awful and sickening! I can not believe these people who are supposed to take away animals that are being abused, people who are suppose to save them, would do such a terrible thing! If someone did this to my animal they would be sued so fast they wouldn't know what hit them! Those poor families who had their pets stolen! Evil reared its ugly head that day!

Boy, that is really sick. That just makes me so upset. I don't care about any no pet clause, that is just wrong. That bunch of idiots, needs to be thrown off of a freaking bridge, themselves. Then, if they happen to make it back up, they need to be thrown off again, and again, until they don't make it up again. I hate the thought that we live in a world where this kind of stuff happens. It's just disgusting.

This ia totally uncalled for , I feel for those owners , the project owners should be charged for cruelty and sent to jail ... Even if there was a ban those animals didn`t deserve to die this way , HOW CRUEL ... The owners must be devastated , I am just hearing about it ... SAD SAD SAD !!!!

This goes beyond shameful, pyewacket! Those responsible should be charged with animal cruelty and jailed. I will never understand the insensitivity of some people. There is always a choice-to do the right thing or the wrong thing. Sadly, in this case they chose to do the wrong thing.
