The most impressive would have to be Chitzen Itza, indeed, although Tikal is pretty impressive as well. And Palenque. What I don't get is why people always seem to forget Teotihuacan, just outside Mexico City. The temple of the Sun and Moon are huge and impressive, and the architecture (once again) shows the Mayan's incredible knowledge of astrology. I guess people will always nominate Chitzen Itza for the descending serpent during the Equinox though, which obviously is truly fascinating. And the fact that the main temple is so 'in your face'.

Well it is very interesting that the main temple El Castillo is actually 3 temples built on top of each other. The Mayan's were a peaceful type society and many pyramid were built at later dates by the other concoquering nations. I can't remember their names. I haven't actually been to Tikal. I'll definately have to check it out when I go down there next. It sounds really cool, especially since the sun and moon are central in my religion. I was talking to one tourist the second time I was down and she actually went to Chitzen Itza on the equinox... but it was overcast so they did not see the descending serpent.
