Why Some People Don't Change

I am a people watcher. I have always been like this-interested in people and how they act. I am having a hard time understanding why it is that some who live in my apartment building are still using drugs at 50 and 60+ years old. My mother used to say that by the time you reach a certain age you should have done most of the things you want to do in life. These people are parents and grandparents, yet they are still wasting their lives, blatantly using drugs each day. A neighbor has been in rehab for over a month and we do see them go in and come back, only to end right back where they started. I just think people should be more grateful than to waste their lives in this way.

They have an addiction and they just can't stop. Or they don't want to stop. People will change Only when they want to change. So if they are going to rehab for a loved one or the police it won't work for long.It is hard to stay sober and you really have to want to stay sober.

Love ones should be a great motivation to get sober but sometimes it doesn't work.

Yes its interesting to watch other people behavior and attitude towards thing, I couldn't agree more on this. well it is hard to change a habit, thats for sure especially when they don't even realize that what their doing is a bad habit, or perhaps they doesn't have the environment that support them to have a useful life, or maybe they are just plain ignorant.. :)

You hit upon a good point there, xcellen. I think environment plays a huge role in the habits we take up. I also think that often people don't feel they have anything to lose so they continue with the bad habits.

Maybe it's human nature. For all those people who are able top achieve amazing things and those who manage to rise above their early circumstances there must be those at the opposite end of the scale. It's about balance, I believe, yin and yang. I attended a local council meeting the other day and one of the matters raised was the awful way some of the villagers keep their homes. It's really disgraceful to those of us who take pride in our homes. It was pointed out that even if council went in and cleaned up all the rubbish in the yards, it would only be a matter of time before the yards were filled with rubbish and junk again. For these sort of people it's a natural progression. But then again, it's not progress at all, they stay in the same place. Why? I guess it's the easy way of life for them.

If they have been doing it that long, then they have never had the opportunity to learn how to cope with the world in a healthy way. So every time something stressful comes up, the only way they know how to cope with it is to get high and not care. That's easier than having to deal with the world that they don't know hoe to handle.

Sadly, azimsay, these people no longer care about the consequences of their actions.

well i don't know why people don't change,i think they are missing out on some much in life but i guess if they have a serious problem the only one that can help them is theirself, they have to beable to help themself in order to receive the help.it's so sad though when you hear stuff like that,i feel they should be more grateful for what they have and fix their problems if they can.pattie

Sounds like there is no support structure after rehab. They just come back to their home and back to their ways. You would think they had some kind of mentor to help them stay on the right path - that's sad!

no accounting for the way people behave..its noit a matter of intelligence either... or class...oe money...think it has a lot to do with parenting...values are learned as we grwo from children to adults..some people are naturally caring people ..others are totally selfis insofar as they destroy their own bodies and the lives of the people around them.. you only have to watch the daytime tv shows such as springer and oprah to see how pathetically selfish people can be.. i think personally there are too many people in the w world with no self worth and no interest in anything but themselves..this is probably why as a whole mankind is an anacronism...for exampole there are people who dedicate their lives for the betterment of others which can sometimes include the loss of their own life and on the other hand we have people out there who have no morals no principles and would beat up an old lady for the sake of a few bucks ...we have aimed for the moon and got there...yet we allow millions to starve evey year in Africa while fat Americans and Europeans gorge themselves on junk food... the world is an ugly place my friends...
