is religion necessary?????

I would like to ask everyone out there whether they think that religion is necessary or not? My personal view is that although religion being a very sacred thing for millions(/billions) it is the root cause for discrimination in human beings. Im not against the concept of God but just believe that being a christian, jew or hindu should not be a discriminatory factor? This breeds a feeling of fundamentalism and can(or does) lead to quite violent results.
