As some of you know I severely re-injured my knee last month. My knees have been through a lot with years of active living and digging, digging and more digging in our garden. I was supposed to have surgery two years ago and managed to hold that off by taking some natural approaches to re-building it. One of the supplements I was on was MSM. I recently started taking it again and things have improved so much with my knee that I am confident that I will be able to put surgery off again as I did the last time. This supplement stands for methysulfonylmethane a natural substance present in food and the human body. It is a non-toxic metabolite of DMSO and has been used in some clinical trails with rather amazing results. It is a nutritional supplement that is rapidly establishing a reputation as a safe, natural and effect solution for many times of pain and inflammatory conditions, including: *Degenerative wear and tear arthritis *Rheumatoid arthritis *Chronic back pain *Chronic headaches *Muscle pain *Fibromyalgia *Tendinitis and bursitis *Carpal tunnel syndrome *TMJ *Post traumatic pain and inflammation *Heartburn MSM is so effective for pain relief that doctors are often able to lower the dosage of medication and at times they are able to discontinue the medication. It is a nutritional supplement that supplies biologically active sulfur and a solely neglected nutrient in our diets today. After being a part of the Mylot community for coming on six months I have read of many out there suffering with a variety of health problems and experiencing a lot of pain because of them. In my work as a healthy living consultant and reporter there are always a lot of things out there that I view with a modicum of skepticism until I gather concrete facts about their validity. MSM is akin to offering information on emotional freedom techniques...this is another thing I know really works from both my personal and professional experience. There are other benefits as well...increased energy, improvements in digestion, thicker nails and hair, improvement in the texture of the skin. If you keyword MSM you will find a lot of information out there...and for anyone suffering with pain and/or any of the other problems listed above I would highly recommend this supplement. As I always tell clients though..if you do decide to include it be sure to make your medical doctor aware of it. There have never been any reports of drug interactions with MSM...but alway err or the side of caution. So anyhow...that is my Perspectives on Healthy Living update for today. I plan to take this supplement indefinitely because of how good I feel when I am on it. Sometimes it takes me awhile to practice what I 'teach' and this is one time where I won't go off it just because I am feeling better! (laugh) I would also be interested in hearing how those of you are in pain manage it. Do you use natural remedies or are prescription drugs the only way you know how? If so are you concerned about side effects and would be be willing to consider something like MSM and if not why? Your comments, feedback and perspectives help to make this site what it is and I appreciate hearing from you! Raia

Hello perspectives and Lakota, I happened to hop around and saw this discussion. From what I can understand, MSM is a collagen builder. All of us were born with a natural and strong collagen but it will start to decrease as we aged. Hence, we will begin to feel all sort of pains in our body. I started taking MSM together with other supplements and it does indeed help me. I would suggest to Lakota to consult a doctor first and see what other supplements you can combine with MSM. Glucosamine-Chondroitin is a very good supplement for joints especially you have trouble with your knee. I'm currently taking the multivitamins with a high dose of MSM. Hope this helps. =)

Glad it is working for you, Raia. I looked and looked but didn't see Vitamin C mentioned. Vitamin C makes MSM work better. The starting dose is 4 parts MSM to 1 part C. If Vitamin C is too acid for a person then Ester C prevents the acid stomach afterwards. I take 3000 mg MSM with 1500 mg. Vitamin C. I know it's a 2 to 1 ratio but it is the ratio I found that works best for me. I also take prescribed Neurontin for nerve pain and I have up to 200 mg Darvocet each day for pain. Can you tell that severe arthritis has messed me up? MSM doesn't work for everyone but I'm glad it has for you. Now go get some C. :-)

Hi Rosie...thanks for adding your input and personal experiences with MSM to the discussion. I wasn't aware of the combination of Vitamin C with the MSM...but I will keep it in mind. I do take Vitamin C daily and lately I have been on live food juices made with our wonderful Champion juicer. The amount of vitamin C that I take with the combination of juices I am uses is giving me a power pack of concentrated nutrients. I mix the MSM crystals into the juice and take it 3 times a day. I will keep your dosage in mind when I am finished my juicing regime and take them less frequently. Although every time I go back on them I wonder why I stop when things improve. Just human nature I guess (laugh)! Anyhow..thanks a heap for your valuable info! Raia
