keep the cats and get a dog.. most animals will adjust to each other fairly quickly. Are you getting an adult or a pup because that will make a difference as well. The puppy is more likely to get beat up by the cats.Your cats will most likely run and hide until they all get used to each other and if your really worried leash or kennel the dog when you introduce it to your cats. Unless the dog your getting is really aggressive or known to hate cats I really wouldn't worry I have had dogs and cats my whole life. I introduced adult cats to adult dogs and never had more then a few swats to the nose and some hissing. keep us posted on when you get your dog

I think that has a lot to do with the training provided. Almost all dogs can be taught to live with cats and it's fairly easy for a puppy that grow up with cats to learn not to chase them. Some breeds are easier to train than others, though. Most of the terrier and hound breeds have a big prey instinct and are likely to chase whatever moves, including cats. You just have to think about what breed would suit your lifestyle and try to take it from there. If you want a big or small dog, how much exercise and training you are able to provide, what shedding level you can tolerate, etc. There's a lot to think about before getting a dog, much more than if it will get along with the cats.
