Art: Hit or miss?

I absolutely adore poetry. I love drawing pictures inside of peoples heads using words. Words that mean nothing sometimes, but, they are words that provoke thoughts. Blue, white, sad, winter, night, purple, etc. All those words draw pictures in our mind of something we stand on common grounds with. A feeling of bitterness or coldness. We are visual creatures after all. But what makes a good poem? Does its structure have anything to do with its artistic appeal? THe poems I write sometimes sound too much like songs because they are typically long, un-rhyming, sometimes scattered, and even off beat. Many poets attempt at least a couple long winded poems (Robert Frost), and many of them fail at it. The idea of art to me, is to express yourself as clearly as possible. I think with most art -including poetry- it is ideal to try and do this to the best of your ability because it is either a hit or a miss. I think many artists confuse themselves with what they create because they become too wrapped up in the act of art itself. THis is a reason why I think art is either a hit or a miss. "A poet sits at his desk with a pen and paper. Too much going through his head. He wants to release it all through glistening black tip of his pen, but when he does, different words appear on the paper. Strange words with meanings that are too shallow. Frustration sets in and he maims his paper in ink." What do you call that? "The poet finsihes his poem. And everyone loves it except him." Why? It does not mean what he wants it to mean. "They tell him it reminds them of things that he hasnt bothered to think about in what seems like ages. He is saddened by his inability, and angered by his audience for believing in something that was not meant to be."Art is not a hit or miss necessarily. I apologize. Maybe I should have said something else. But, hey, it sounds catchy anyways, eh? Art that does have meaning, whether its from a 6 year old girls kindergarten class or a peice from Beethoven, has value. IT all represents something or other. Its meanings may vary from artist to audience. Its meanings may strike each person differntly. The thing that differentiates art is whether it strikes us at all. Lets go back to the original composition of art though. Does a poem need to follow some structure? Does art follow some obscure or hidden form of structure? What is poetry considered to you? What is art considered to you?

Hi,jagga1111,it seems that you a person who have great interest in art. I really appreciate you very much. I also has much interest in these issues for maybe my professional study has some relationship with art, By the way, I'm studying in the field of design. I would like to answer your first question, in my point of view, it is not necessary to emphasize the structure too much when conceiving the poem. If one pay much attention on this, it will be easier to waste much energy on the trivial, like "what word I should use ?" "Is it sounded harmony" or something else, while regardless of the context one really wants to express. As you said, the art is to express yourself as clearly as you can. I totally agree with this idea. I think the excellent work is the one written by one's real heart.Without this, other factors could never construct a good one. What's more, there are many successful examples tell us that poems with various structures no matter traditional or very novel are well received as long as its context do strike people. For example, in ancient China, people widely appreciated order forms of poems, 4 or 5 words per line, while in modern times (after 1912) poems are written freely with diverse kinds forms, among which also have a great amount classical works. So presenting the instant feeling and inspiration is most vital task for a poets. Admittedly, the form also plays a role in poem. However, I think you should consider it only after you have totally expressed your idea, and examine it in second or third time when you feel that certain form could help you better express your feeling. The views may be not comprehensive and analyses in depth, but I hope there's something could be helpful to you. Hope you will be a great artist~
