Why did Harper Lee choose to end PART ONE of To Kill a Mockingbird after chapter 11? It doesn't make sense to me. Anyone think they know why?

I think it has something to do with the fact that she may not have written it strictly as a novel. A lot of people believe that her publishers simply pieced her notes on many different things about her life in her hometown together and put that into book format. I don't believe that but that is what many people believe. It would explain your question too, I think.

WOW this is exactly ONE YEAR late! Goodness, Im sorry! I found out it had something to do with Harper Lee purposly leaving the gap between ages and maturity open to make room FOR the children in her novel TO grow and learn new things...your point is also very good though, you must like this book. This is the second time I've read it, I love it.

I have a very old copy of the book, and it doesn't have any *parts*, just *chapters*. Perhaps they were added later? (A bit like the Bible, where chapters and verses were added centuries after being written, and often placed in strange, almost inexplicable places).
