Todd, Something comes clearly into view when a person is diagnosed as a diabetic. If we continue to live the life that lead us up to this diagnosis, it will destroy our kidneys and eyes, greatly increase the chance of amputations and puts us way up the list for the probability for heart attacks and strokes. In answer to your question - yes, I can handle the restrictions because I want to live!! Being diagnosed a little over a year ago has actually helped me beyond words. I've dropped a lot of weight and have begun exercising. I'm much healthier than last year at this time. The "restrictions" are quickly overlooked when they have to be!! :o)

I am one sturborn person so when I was told I had type 2 diabetes I refused to give up the foods I liked, so I got off my tush and found ways that I could eat them without making my blood sugar rise. We can't eat pizza because of the crust so I use a low-carb tortilla for the crust. We were told not to eat potatoes but I found a way to reduce the starch(which is what turns to sugar after eating) in them and now I can eat fried potatoes without any worries. I eat fried pies (apple and cherry)I eat pasta (Dreamfields brand) I eat cheesecakes and chocolate candy (fake) but it taste real. So if you want to stay on your diet, you can and still enjoy your favorite foods. You just have to adapt them to your diet. My doctor has even asked me for some recipes to give his other patients. My blood sugar is normal and so is my cholesterol.

Hello todd798, Any one suffering with diabetes will cope up well. Though they may feel it is difficult in the begining, when the days go they get practised to that diet restrictions. Then they feel it is easy to cope.

well I can't eat dairy or wheat. At first it was hard but you get used to it! If I try a little chocolate or bread or whatever like that now i don't like it! it is too heavy for my body and it rejects it. You tend to like things because you have learnt to like them. However, you can also learn not to like them!
