My husband is a deer hunter ... I can't stand venison

My husband started hunting deer this year with a friend from work. He was very excited to start bow hunting as it is something that he's wanted to do for some time now. He called me a few weeks back to tell me that he got what we have called a "Monster Buck". It was a large 8-point buck that has yeilded LOTS of meat. While I was very excited for him and his success as a hunter, I can't stand the taste of venison. He had it butchered with 1/3 beef ... but it still tastes and smells funny to me. I don't know how to let him know that I don't really like it without hurting his feelings. I know that he wanted to hunt so that he could provide extra meat for the family.

I for one absolutely love venison, but it is true it's all in the butchering. I also don't cook it often because I don't want to ruin it. But one time I had a freezer full of ground venison, not sure of what to do with it I made it into shephards pie. I used Onion Soup Mix to make the gravy, it turned out fantastic. It might be something to try. Funny story, my ex sister-in-law was so adament that she wouldn't eat venison that everytime I had them over for roast, I would have to keep the wrapper to prove to her it was actually roast beef.

You should have kept the same roast beef wrapper and show it to her every time! LOL. Okay, what's your address, you can consider it my Christmas present!!

You are in quite a stew! (sorry about that!) Is it that you don't like the taste or you psychologically don't like the taste? Either way, the result is the same. It all boils down (again, sorry about that), to the fact that you don't like the taste. When I was a very young girl my grandfather was quite a hunter and would bring home rabbits (those feet weren't so lucky were they). He was the one to cook them while my grandmother made all of the rest of the dinner. Dinner was ready when I got to their house on this particular Sunday and we all sat around the table. The meat was plated up for me and what I asked what it was, Grandpa said it was chicken and I ate it. After I had finished the meal, he revealed to me that it was "bunny". I promptly barfed all over the kitchen. I really wish that there was something that I could say to help you out. The only thing I can suggest is that you tell him the truth. If he and your children eat it; it really shouldn't bother him, as he probably has dislikes of his own and will be able to relate. All you have to do is fix it for them the way you normally would and throw on a burger, a steak, or a piece of chicken for yourself that night. I hope this will be of some help. ~Donna

I really just don't like the gamey taste. I made some up last night using 1/2 lb venison and 1-1/2 lb. hamburger and I couldn't taste it ... perhaps I just need to use it to stretch the amount of beef that we have so he can still contribute to the family's meat eating without me having to make something entirely different. Your bunny story made me laugh ... I imagine your grandpa smiling and laughing to himself when he reveals that he tricked you and then you got the last "word" in when you promptly barfed all over the kitchen table! Though it was probably your poor grandma that had to clean it up!!

As a matter of fact, he was the one that had to clean it while my poor little old grandma, all 4'8" of her, bowed legs and all, was wiping my head with a cool wash cloth and just b*^ching at him at the same time ~Donna

I can't say that I have ever had venison. So I can't say that I know what it tastes like. Might you try looking up different recipes in hopes that you could disguise the taste. Maybe you could actually find some recipe that could help you to stand the meat. :) Otherwise, I strongly suggest that you ask him to start hunting wild bird of some sorts. Turkey, pheasant and such. :) Sorry you don't like the venison. Maybe it was just an old deer that taste bad with age? ha ha

He's been joking about doing spring turkey season ... none of us like turkey much. Perhaps I'll have to find VillageAnn or someone of her caliber to give me good venison recipes! ... unless of course you have some!

Yummmmmmm send it to me I can use it. I was raised on venison Yup daddy poached it. He is long gone now but I grew up eating venison. My son got his legal buck last weekend 2 days before hunting season closed. It really helps go a long way to feed us as we are low income and really is a blessing. Additionally Venison is healthier for you. It doesn't have all the injected hormones and is leaner. Your husbands buck would be gamier since it is an older deer. Another thing about it being gamey is that some states have an early hunt in October before the rut is on. Then later for two weeks in November. The rutting season makes the meat a lot gamier. Your husband might see if your state has an earlier time to hunt. Mariniating it can help a lot, use garlic and onion as well. Just some possible thoughts.

Last night before I went to sleep I was actually thinking that the venison might taste better if it was injected with hormones ... perhaps that was the taste that I was missing! ;) Though we normally eat organic beef so that might not be totally true. It was shot during rut ... I'll have to tell him that you said it tastes gamier during this time. Do you have any idea why that might be? Perhaps it's the hormones??? LOL. Sorry that was bad.

mmmmmmmmm..I love venison. Wish my hubby was a deer hunter but, atlas, he's as bad as I am when it comes to killing an animal....he can't. My dad didn't deer hunt either but my bro does and in my neighborhood, I'm surrounded by deer hunters it seems. I've been offered venison left and right but will only eat it ground up. The best way to take the gamey taste out is to mix it 1/2 venison 1/2 beef or pork. I make burgers, meatloaf, sloppy joes, and other stuff that calls for hamburger with that combo. I use venison straight for hamburger helper and other meals that you mix with ground beef. I don't like the gamey taste either but it's good the zillion ways I prepare it. My daughter, who is 9yr. old, likes vension as well. We are low-income and I go to the local pantry every week. Whenever they have vension, they know I'll take it, and will put some aside for me. Soooooooo..let hubby bring home the 'bacon' for that's what they have always done back b4 cows were invented and just get creative in preparing it is all long as it's ground up. :-)

We're low income too, so that's why I'm upset that I don't like it. I know it would be very helpful for our family if I could just swallow it! I have found that if I mix it with the hamburger and save beef grease that it covers up the deer taste! If nothing else it helps stretch the beef!

i'm right behind you, can't stand the taste either.my question is if your hubby just started hunting deer this year "does he like the taste" truthfully. most of my friends hunt and when i tell them i don't like the taste they tell me "try it this way" i've soaked it in milk, marinated it,etc but it still has that "gamey taste" it's just not for some people and i'll eat just about anything even rocky mountain oysters and if you don't know what they are ask hubby.good luck

I dont blame you about the venison. I dont care for it much either. But I am glad for hunters that use the meat or their family. That is so much better than just hunting and leaving the animal lay there. That makes me so mad. But many people do like the taste of it. Lots make it into summer sausage. :)
