Controversy Over Global Warming

Everytime I try and talk about Al Gore and Global Warming the people at work tell me Al Gore is an idiot. Sadly we don't even recycle and I complain about it daily. Does anyone else contest Al Gore and the theory of Global Warming.

Wow. To begin, Global Warming is NOT a myth. Just because Al Gore is preaching about Global Warming doesn't mean that Global Warming has any correlation to Al Gore. He didn't create the theory. He is not the scientist discovering the scary realizations resulting from the ever worsening man-made disaster. He is simply spreading the word. To decide Global Warming is not true based on an opinion about Al Gore is ignorant, it's stupid, and it's unbelievably selfish. Global Warming isn't about Al Gore. It's about you, its about me, its about our families, our friends, our children (or potential children), and our future generations. As far as I'm concerned, Al Gore will not feel or see the majority of the worst effects that result from Global Warming, because he is old. Don't you realize that his devotion to Global Warming, although it most likely will not end his life, is very admirable? Truthfully, I could care less about Al Gore. I was not in favor of him as a politician either, but Global Warming is not about politics. The severity of our environmental situation should not be underestimated. It's such a shame, like "fire----" said below, that this discussion will most likely remain very small. Global Warming is under exposed. It should be overly discussed, because sooner than later, it will end human existence. Once humans are gone, they will never come back. It's very likely that the problems we have caused are irreversible, but that doesn't mean we should create more pollution to speed up the process. Plus, we can always try to slow down Global Warming and pray that science will eventually find a solution. It can never hurt to try. If not for you, do it for your kids, or nieces, or nephews. Even if you don't make an effort, at least take a moment to watch the television programs and internet websites devoted to global warming. If they can't open your eyes, nothing will. To make the decision that Global Warming is a myth based on an indifference to Al Gore is mindless. To decide Global Warming is a Myth without thoroughly studying the situation is ridiculous. Don't speak of something as serious as Global Warming out of opinion for you could potentially persuade the ignorant and consequently, the world could be misinformed. That's just unfair.

Great response, I am puzzled what it was in response to, I didn't see that anyone referred to it (global warming) as a myth, although I may have missed it.

It's a response to the initial posted question. I'm not targeting the poster, at all, but rather the fact that "people say Al Gore is an idiot." Clearly, Al Gore is not an idiot... perhaps Politics just wasn't his thing. I felt the need to elaborate on the question of Al Gore and his "theory" for anyone in the future who may be opposed to Global Warming, especially if its because of their prior opinion of Al Gore.

It wasn't referred to as a myth, exactly. It was just that the question of the theory was placed. I don't believe this is a theory, being that many scientists have provided factual evidence to support their claims.

I think the problem with Al is the fact he is a hypocrite. I don't think it's an accident that he is or that he is voicing a contraversial point of view about a critical topic. This is to distract the public away from taking action to save the environment. By the time the masses wake up to the problem it will be too late to solve anything. If you don't believe me, watch how popular this discussion becomes, it won't! You may get a handful of responses on what could be THE most important problem facing the human race! I'm begining to wonder if life on this planet is even worth saving.

You're right it's sad that we as a people don't do more for the environment. It's pathetic how caviler we are.

Aussies posted another discussion along the same lines and my response will be similar to the one I responded to there. I am a free lance writer and journalist and although there is an undeniable reality that there are significant earth changes occurring the jury seems to be out on what is actually causing them. For example Al Gore mentioned Arctic melting did not indicate that in Antarctica areas are starting to re-freeze...so what about global warming there? What that says to me is that human beings look at everything through their limited perspective on time. Whether the religious right accepts it or not this planet has been around for a lot longer than 6,000 years. Over the millions of years it has been in existence geologists and meteorologists understand and accept that weather is not something that can ever be adequately predicted. In the mid seventies the naysayers were sure that we were headed for an ice age. Now they are convinced that the planet is doomed because of global warming. As a reporter my position is always to gather as much information as possible and make decisions (or not) from as neutral a position as possible. From my perspective...that is what we all need to do whether we agree with Al Gore's position or any other. The other reason people may be claiming that he is an idiot is because they don't like the message. Accountable living is not something many want to consider because it requires lifestyle changes they do not want to make. So it is easier to discredit the messenger. That way they can tune out the message. Anyway, good discussion. Raia

Thanks for you excellent response. I also think there are usually conflicting reports on any given subject and when stating a position it's irresponsible to omit all sides. I personally think mankind has definately adversely affected the planet and if we don't begin to make changes there are going to be dire consequences.

Here's how I see it. Al Gore and plenty of his ilk shut down debate and sham anyone with even a small iota of difference in opinion. I do not appreciate it, especially in science, life, well virtually everything. Additionally, if there are moderate or significant issues, variations and data, they should be considered (not ignored, removed or denied). Conductwise, there is a "do as I say, not as I do" kind of theme when it comes to certain clowns and this subject. I always like when there's tons of commonplace heavy vehicle use, common private airplane use, multiple trailers for shows/events... it easily looks backwards when looked at rationally. Vmen, try looking in the science as a hobby interest group and maybe you'll see some discussions on global warming to see what's going on. As for Al Gore, here's a sample of why some people are talking the way they are http://scienceandpublicpolicy.org/monckton/goreerrors.html I've even verfied some of these facts and remember others from my science studies. One other thing. I say recycling is good, and it should be done. I also say pollution should be reduced and governments along with businesses should be doing what they can to reduce it. The problem is, there are those willing to crash land economies, societies, ways of life. Societies should do what is possible and work to improve from there (instead of trying to meet the impossible, getting downward ripples in the economy, and paying because a society/country was unable to make it despite all efforts). Its very serious, not just the subject of what is causing warming... but also what some people want to do about it, what some people tell others to do about it (without doing it themselves), why is debate not accepted by certain sides of this issue, how to handle the very hard changes required in society (alternate energies are still catching up to current energies).
