i need advice for my kids

I figured I turn to mylot for an answer on a hard question. I will start off with i have 2 dogs one husky one dalmation and three gdughters 9,5,and 6 monthes. Heres the problem. I bought our dalmation when my oldest was about 1 1/2 years old. And the kids for a while now have been wanting to get another one sense my 9yr olds dad took the dog when we broke up awhile ago. (He still brings the dog around to see them) But as it turns out her didn't take very good care of her and she has a tumor the could have been removed if he would have borther to do something about instead of waiting years todo so the tumor is an amazing mass hanging off my poor dog. And i he finaly took her to the vet now theres nothing they can do for her and my kids say shes in pain and that she hurts but he wont put her down. I'm afraid if i do get them another puppy they wont want anything to do with it after are older dalmation dies And advise would be helpful
