Last Thursday, the kids and I were in a car accident. Photo included... I'll start by saying we are all OK. I was going just below 70km/hr when I reached a sharp bend in the road. I applied my foot on the brakes to slow down when I noticed a truck on my left who seem to be pulling out of a drive way. I didn't pay mind to him however as I turned the corner, his lights illuminated the road and I saw the black ice. I started loosing control. We swerved from one side to another; I'm really surprised we didn't hit any guard rails. I remember thinking OK let go of the brakes and keep the wheel straight. I regained control a few times just to lose it again just as quick. I wanted to warn the kids but decided not to cause a panic! We made it threw the bend OK but we continued to slide until finally we seem to just fly off the road and head for a solid tree! I have to say the most unpleasant aspect of the accident itself are those airbags although I'm very thankful for them! A powder shoots out of them causing the air to become unbreathable. The first thing I did was ask the children if they were OK and then I rolled the windows down. My oldest daughter was choking from the 'dust'. I looked behind us to see if that truck noticed we went off the road, they were just pulling up aside the road and I could hear a man talking on the phone, I correctly assumed with 911. I had already turned the engine off however this man yelled out to shut it off because there was smoke. I yelled back it was from the airbags however he insisted it wasn't. It seem to take the rescue team a long time to arrive. I was becoming restless, I wanted to get out of the car but we had been advised not to move. We could hear people yelling OH MY GOD... MOVE!! WATCH OUT!! every time another car approached the bend. Many slid but were more fortunate than us. The man who had called 911 finally came back to the car and informed me he was going to take the kids away from the car in case another one slammed in behind us/on top of us and reassured me he'd be back for me. As I watched him help my children to the road, I noticed another car sliding, coming right towards me. He did manage to stop on the gravel. I did not know at the time that my children were still behind my car, I was just thankful they were not IN the car. To think now that they could have been killed or seriously injured throughout this whole time is very unsettling! This is when a volunteer firefighter (driver of sliding car) crawled in the back seat and told me NOT TO MOVE! I tried to tell him that I wanted to go with my kids but he reassured me they were OK but I was not to move. He sat behind me, placed his hands on my head/neck and held me still for what seemed to be about another 10 minutes. He tried to talk to me, keep me calm, told me I had to stay still for precautions, since as a mother my instincts are to protect the children so I could have made my injuries worse as I moved about in the car. I explained my fear of other cars sliding off the road. He told me that he wasn't going to leave me. I'm thinking: Great! That only reassures me that I won't die alone!! Finally paramedics arrived. One of them jokingly said that I was illegally parked. Firefighter was still holding my head while someone placed a blanket over me, another flashed lights in my face, another poked and prod me and asked me to move my hands, legs, shoulder, another yelled POSSIBLE NECK INJURY. I felt no pain so I feared these people knew something I didn't. Finally I was given the OK to move. I had not realized that they had previously tried to open my door to no avail. They informed me they would manage to open it and I was to slide out slowly. I had two men help me to the ambulance ensuring I didn't feel faint or dizzy. The man from the truck who called 911 happened to be at this particular corner because his own daughter had just flipped her vehicle upside down in the ditch. The crawled out without injuries however I feel lucky they were there because I now had eye witness of the accident and someone available to call for help. I also found out that the paramedics first responded to another accident that happened just after mine a few minutes away. They also escaped without major injuries. I have to say that throughout this whole ordeal, everyone, even the kids, stayed calm! My youngest daughter (8) had a sore belly from the seatbelt. My oldest (12) has a banged up knee and a headache. I had a bloody nose. My face was sore, my lips numb and left side of my neck was sore to the touch. All airbag and seatbelt injuries which is the only kind I'm glad we have. The rescue team praised the children for having their seatbelts on. I was surprise upon exiting the vehicle how squished I seem to be between the steering wheel and seat however once I saw what the car looked like, I had a better understanding. I still have a headache that feels like a really bad hangover and my neck is quite stiff however I'm not hurting anywhere else. So the moral of the story is, drive safely and always wear your seatbelts!!

I am so glad you are all ok. At this point I guess you may be thinking about the "dust" from the airbag as the least of your problems. We are lucky in this part of Texas because we rarely get problems with ice on the roads. It is a good thing cause around Houston we have a lot of drivers who drive agressively. You must have had an angel looking out for you. Take care of yorself and your kids.

I just did a quick search on the internet to see if I could find a better explanation but all I found was that the powder is either cornstarch or talcum powder to lubricate the bag... that doesn't sound half as sophisticated now does it? lol

Hello momofalltrades. I am so sorry to hear that you have got such a serious car accident, but I am happy to know that you are safe from the accident and I think that it is always right to wear seatbelt while riding a car. Be always careful whenever and wherever, my dear friend. I hope that you will get well soon.

Wow, what a scary story, I am so glad to hear that everyone is fine. I would hope to be as calm as your family was if anything like that happened to me. I do make sure that my son and I always wear a seat belt.. I hope this story encourages those who don't to reconsider.

Yes, we live in the country too and I have been fortunate enough to not have a deer run in front of me yet. They have when my husband drives and that is enough for me to freak..lol

I believe the only reason why I was calm was because my husband has told me time and time again that if I ever start to slide or lose control, to let the car do it's thing. If you fight the car, it will fight back! Just a few nights before the accident, we discussed the possibility of hitting wild life someday since it's all highway to our home in the country. The worse thing to do is hit the brakes in a moment of panic however it is the first reaction any coheran human being would do!

While I was reading that I was thinking 'please don't let someone have been killed' especially when I looked at the picture of teh car that you posted and I'm glad that once I reached the end, you were all safe. You obviously taught your kids how to be safe in cars with seatbelts which is wonderful and it's great to hear that people came to help you straight away. i also loved it when you wrote about the firemen making jokes to ease the tension. The emergency services just rock at times and this sounds like one of them. I really hope that you all get over the shock and bruises really quickly and that it doesn't ever happen to you again!

The rescue team was awesome!! They did eleveate a lot of tension with their good sense of humour. Once the police office informed us that the car was going to be towed, my daughter got concerned over her precious rock collection in the back seat. A paramedic rescued the rocks and brought them back to her safe and sound.

i am so glad that you are all o.k.i had a similar experience, not on ice but with oil on the road.my son and i were driving and hit a patch of oil and the car just spun out of control,,we hit a couple of guard rails did a few 360's blew a tyre and just kept spinning.the car behind me started to spin but managed to gain control, luckily.he stopped and checked us out .luckily my son and myself were o.k.the car was a right off.but the seat belts saved our lives.its scarey and i know how you feel about the mother instincts.just keep a eye out on your children for a while and make sure those their injuries are o.k.take care and i hope all goes well cheers sue

My youngest daughter has no injury at all and my oldest has a bruise just above the knee. It's amazing to see the car and know we were in that car but we escaped without injury. I was surprised we didn't hit the guard rails and slid for so long. I've been wanting to go back to the scene to see it again in day light. I want to see the tree, I want to see just how far we actually did slide. Just haven't had a chance to yet and today/tomorrow we're having a snow storm so it will be while still before I can go! It is scary because you don't know what the outcome is going to be! I'm glad to hear you guys were ok too.

Thanks for the reminder. It's so scary driving during winter. There must be so many accidents like this. Better slow down when approaching a curve or slippery part of the road.

Because it was a cold night after a day of rain, I was told they brought on more paramedics that night because they knew there would be a lot of accidents. And to know that there were 3 just on that corner is a scary thought!!

Wow. What a story! I'm glad everyone was ok. I've experienced the airbag thing and I agree, they not only hurt but, they put out a tremendous about of smoke/powder. Even though I didn't like it, I'm glad I had them because they saved me from getting hurt worse than I did.

Glad you were safe as well! My doctor reassured me my nose would recover! The air bag bruised the nose area which is also contributing to the headache! I am very grateful for the airbags!!

This whole thing sounds to me as utter rubbish. Is that really the seat belt which caused the problem.According to me accidents are caused not because of anyone's fault ,but it's just happens that's all.One should not blame anyone for these kind of accidents.

I never claimed that the seat belt caused the problem, I said it saved us from injury!! The accident happened because there was ice on the road and I lost control of the vehicle.
