Is Life Of Brian Sacreligous bile, or Clever comedy

I have watched the film LOADS of times, and still can't see why it was banned in so many places. True, there is quite a lot of swearing, but as far as I am aware that is not the reason for it being banned. Was it just a beautifully crafted rollercoaster of comedy, or has it helped to destroy world religion?
