Have you ever called 911?

I work in a small take out restaurant and was by myself yesterday. One of our regular customers ( an oler man around 70)came in and was sitting on a stool. He usually sits and talks to his friends for a bit so after serving him I continued my work. About 5 minutes later I heard a huge crash. The man had gone unconsious and fallen on the floor. His friend and I tried to get him up and finally he got up and sat on a bench. We asked him if he was ok and he said yes. At this point his friend left (nice friend , huh?) and I was all alone with this guy. As soon as the friend left I called my boss, who was on his way in since my shift was over in 5 minutes. As soon as I got off the phone the man went unconcious again. I called 911 and it took the ambulance ages to get there. By the time they did the man had regained conciosness and was talking a bit. He seemed fine and he is going to be ok. It was pretty scary to me and I wasn't really sure what to do. Afterwards I realized I probbably should hae called 911 as soon as he went unconcious, but at the time I was really scared. I will know better what to do nest time, but I really hope there never is a next time. Have you ever had to call 911?

I've had to call a few times. Once was when I witnessed a wreck. Two black men in a stolen car with bogus plates ran a red light and slammed into the side of a truck that was going through an intersection. When the car stopped, the two black men ran and I was able to call 911 and give the dispatcher a clothing list and a general idea of what they looked like and where they went. Within 3 minutes, 6 police cars were on the scene, with a K9 officer helping to find the men. They did find the men. Another time was when my neighbor's infant daughter quit breathing. She was born 6 weeks premature and had RSV and was having issues. It was very icy and snowy outside, so I called 911 so an ambulance could come get the baby and the grandmother and take them both to the hospital.

Wow, that must have been scary when the baby had stopped breathing. I hope that everything was ok.

Oh yes. I've been CPR trained now going on about 15 years, so without thinking I knew what to do and started CPR on the infant as I dialed 911 with one hand, I did CPR with the other hand.

I've never had to dial 911 on my own before. I'm glad I haven't had an incident (yet at least!) where I had to. Crossing my fingers! ;o)
