The Church of Satan (started by Anton Levay), basically uses the image of "Satan" to signify human desires. The practice of Satanism is about indulging those desires rather than rejecting them. It's basically about individualism, being your own master, etc. Satanists do actually follow certain rules, like being kind to those who deserve it, responsibility to those who are themselves responsible, etc. There's a lot of the idea of doing to others as they do unto you, not being equally nice to everyone regardless of their actions, or turning the other cheek and such. In Satanism there is no belief in the actual Christian "devil". Devil worship is exactly that, worship of the Christian devil. Satanists see it as a form of Christian heresy, not as a religion, and especially not as "Satanism". I'm speaking out of what my Satanist friends have told me mostly, and my experience with their beliefs through them.

It depends on what you personally believe. Since I don't believe in Satan (or the Christian devil), he is a made up character to me. Some people use "Satan" and "the devil" interchangeably when referring to the Christian "evil" entity. Biblically he is both seen as something of an "accuser" who watches humans for sin, and then also seen as the serpent who tempts Eve, and Lucifer the fallen angel. According to some Biblical scholars, the idea of Satan actually ties together a few separate entities in Abrahamic mythology, rather than really being just one entity. However, modern popular Christianity basically teaches Satan is the devil who is the ruler of Hell, the enemy of God, and the being who tempts and corrupts humans. However, when a "Satanist" uses the word Satan, they're only using it as a symbol, not saying they believe in him as a literal being.

In the "Who's Who In The Bible" Editor Paul D. Gardner, it says that the devil is used in the Bible to describe satin, and used to described satin when he tempted Jesus in the desert. The bible gives the description of satan as being a angelic being who rebelled against his Creator God and was cast from heven.

Satanism and devil worshiping are very different things Satanism is a religion of it's own. It is about embracing your desires unlike most religions that say many of them are sins and satanist don't believe in a higher being and we see ourselves as our own god. Devil worshiping a form of Christianity in witch they worship the Christian devil (also known as Satan or Lucifer)

Satan, the Devil same guy. Satanism is a group of people that hold the devil as their god. That's the short on it anyways.

"Satanism is a group of people that hold the devil as their god" Sorry but thats incorrect....Satanism is a philosophy for life not a worshipping thing...Satanists dont hold anything but themselves basically as their god..
