and you didn't have health insurance. How would you set about coming up with the money to pay for the operation? The operation is going to cost you 8.000.00. What do you do?

WOW! Are you going through this?! Well I guess as we own our house I would tap out our home equity. Though we don't have much and I don't think it would be enough to cover all that. Then I would try for bank loans I guess. And setting up payment plans with the doctors and hospitals. I just ranted on another friends discussions about our health care in this country. It's a damn same that we actually have to worry about things like this - instead of us having universal health care and actually taking care of our fellow neighbors.

Actually, yes. That's why I haven't been on here except sporadically. Life is on a down hill slide at the moment. Just waiting for the crest of that next hill! My Mom moved to Canada a few years ago and they have universal healthcare. The taxes are a heck of a lot higher but her heart surgery was free! She thinks the higher taxes are worth what you get in return and I tend to agree with her. I would pay higher taxes for the priveledge of getting much needed health care!

That really sucks for you!!! I'm thinking and praying for you! And I totally agree with you - I'd much rather pay higher taxes then have to worry for one minute about health care. It is totally worth it.

If it's a surgery you must have sometimes the hospital has charity help ask them for a form? Does your state have any kind of Medicaid?

This is a hypothetical question. Say you don't qualify for medicaid. What would you do? So many people are uninsured. It got me thinking. What if you had to have an operation and had to raise the money yourself? How would you do it?

I guess I'd be out of luck. I can't raise that much for anything. If it was for my child I would ask for state assistance.

I have insurance. However, my mother does not. She had surgery last year. The cost was similar. She has had to make some payment arrangements. The rest, I believe she put on a credit card. Because we live in different states, my current company would not allow me or my husband to put her on our policy. It is a sad state to be in at her age. So many other countries have a national healthcare system. Might be worth looking into.

It is sad that anyone should be without health coverage but I doubt national healthcare will happen in the USA anytime soon.
