News Blackout on Impeachment Call

United States
December 16, 2007 8:04pm CST
On Friday, Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida joined with two other representatives on the House Judiciary Committee to call for hearings to begin into the impeachment of VP Richard Cheney. Despite the fact that 5 others on the committee have already co-sponsored the impeachment resolution, and the three latest co-authored an Op-Ed which they submitted to major news outlets, every one of them (New York Times, Washington Post and others) refused to publish the op-ed or even make any mention of the action in their newspapers. Why do you think such important news was buried?

I wonder at the timeliness of an impeachment would be.. I mean pre election campaigning is going on. I wonder if having such a thing to happen would cast a shadow and distract voters from vocusing on candidates and the appraocing Elections? Think of it..why now.. Is it an democratic thrust at the Republican party to try to influence voters?

What it is about is accountability. Regardless of whether an impeachment occurs, holding hearings to finally bring the truth to the surface is essential to our democracy. Should the misdeeds, secrecy, erosion of civil rights, etc... go unchallenged, it will set a frighteningly destructive precedent for what the executive branch is able to do in the future. In fact, some think that the sole reason that the Dems have not brought impeachment proceedings against Cheney or Bush is because, knowing they will win the presidency in 2008, they want the same powers as the current administration has claimed for itself.

Probably because they do not think the impeachment procedings will ever really get off the ground.

I'd love to KNOW why a story like that was buried! That's utterly ridiculous in my opinion. Whatever happened to freedom of the press? I think they're afraid something like this would really take hold because I know I'm not alone in believing Cheney should not only be impeached but tried as a war criminal. Where did you hear this? I'm a total news junkie and I somehow missed it! I'm also a big fan of Congressman Wexler although I'm from way up north in Pennsylvania. Annie

Congressman Wexler was a guest on the Randi Rhodes show (www.novamradio.com) on Friday talking about it.
