Is it difficult to own one house for your family in your country?

In the developed cities of our country, it's very difficult to own one house for our family. If we want to buy one house, we need spend a lot of money on it, and only few people can pay all the money one time. Most of people need pay some amount first and then pay the left payment month by month;it takes about 10-20 years to finish all the amount, it's a very heavy burden for people's life. Most of young couples have this kind of trouble, how about your city and your country? Please share your information.

i use to own my own home,but being a single mum it got too much in the end,so i had to make the decision to sell and be happy renting or stay and be miserable trying to find the money to cover the mortgage.i live in australia by the way and it is not so easy.cheers sue
