do you lie when necessary is ok to lie period?

I've heard people say they lie when necessary but when is it necessary to lie at all someone i know said this to me in i need to hear others take on this topic.

It's not really ok to lie at all. But some times I do tell white lies in order to spare feelings. Never ever lie about something really important.
