till today little computers could only understand two little things,'0'&'1', thats because the hardware which was avilable(i.e, transister) when the computers(micro chips)evolved was able to represent two states thats 'on'=1 and 'off'=0 (one more state called supreconducting or blow state which is not considered).this is the phase 1 of computing.but now as the technology develops new microdevices can ro have been invented so that a single device can represent atleast 256 states.then all thesymbols can be represented in a bit and number of cycles for any purpose can be reduced drastically. And supercomputers can come to our hands. NOW THE QUESTION IS:: Is there or can there be any device which can represent 256 diffrient states?

There is some work in signal processing and switching. "This is called multiple valued logic,a binary logic would then be a 2 subgroup, the site multivaluelogic.com can tell you more.
