Are cartoons better in 3D or 2D?

I'm really tired of 3D cartoons. I don't know if it's a matter of "nostalgia" for the things I saw when I was a child, but IMHO old 2D cartoons were much better than the 3D movies of today. They had some sort of "magic" in them, but now producers care more about how much hairs there are in the fur of an animal than to make a good plot, and the 3D medium, with its forced realism, steal all the magic. Yeah, there are good 3D movies, like Finding Nemo or Shrek, but it's not the realism that make them good, it's the good plot. I hope disney will return to 2D, the cartoon part of "Enchanted" was so beautiful it made me cheer.

I disagree with your post. I believe that implementing 3D technology into the cartoons have changed a lot the cartoon industry. Don't forget that there isn't only 3D technique but also 2.5D meaning that (as you probably have watched) the foreground is 3D and the background is in 2D (sketch) or vice versa. Today's cartoon sometimes lacks plot, are more violent but i cant tell they aren't aesthetic because it's 3D. And don't forget the same magic you saw in Enchanted, exactly the same magic saw a child when watched Nemo...because it is a child! Take care

I like when they are using 3D to spice up a 2D movie (like some fire effects in Enchanted) is it that 2.5D? i can't tell they aren't aesthetic because of 3D In my opinion it depends on the movie. Some are aesthetical awesome (like Shrek or Nemo) but some definitely aren't. In Over the edge human were like plastic puppets from the sims, in others they are so realistic the "magic is stolen" (I'm thinking about the new disney movie with the disney robot. Cute, but for me it's not cartoon anymore).

We can't stop innovation even in cartoons! But i agree with others, i want more 2D cartoons too, Disney or manga, but not so violent, don't forget the first viewer of a cartoon is a child! Btw i want to congratulate open the guys in the european studio Aardman for their decision not to go 3D. They prefer their old good technique (stop frame motion) for their movies! Art is art no matter the tools! (ever seen a soviet cartoon?)

I think now even the 2D cartoons are beginning to realy become annoying.Too many robots, and poorly drawn characters.Watching one of those makes you think,"even I can draw that thing". Here's to Tom&Jerry and The Flinstones . Now you've made me nostalgic hehe.

Are you talking about animated series aired in Cartoon Network or Disney Channel? I was talking about big movies, however I agree with you: some of the new series are awful and they all copy each other.

It all depends actually, we have grown up watching some of the cartoons on 2d therefore we may just not be too impressed seeing them in 3d! Actually, I believe the concept of the movie & the way its carried out also impacts whether 3d is better or 2d.

I like either, but I do prefer the 2D. Isn't it obvious ;p I grew up with 2D and I'm glad to see it stick around.

you are right!I absolutely agree your opinion.Movie technology make movie itself more and more expensive while people's heart become more and more lonely. Also IMHO,3D cartoon movies are not real cartoon or fairy tale, they are products at most, which are a lack of human "magic"--just like you say

I can't call films like toy story or finding nemo as "just products". I think there's magic in them too. It's only a matter of the story, maybe

I like 2D and 3D the same. It's only a matter of the story, for example Toy Story is far better than Home on the Range (uggh), while Chicken Little and Over the Edge can't even be compared to the old disney classics

Yeah, "Home on the Range" was so afwful it almost burned my eyes. Toy Story is good, but I think movies like "beauty and the beast" were much better.

In term of graphic and colour, 3D is much better to watch compare to 2D cartoons. With the advance in technology, 3D really make the cartoon movies more realistic. Sometime it is as good as real characters or actors in the movie. However, I don't really care whether it is in the form of 2D or 3D so long as I like the cartoon itself. Take for example, Bug bunny is one of my favorite until today though it it is in 2D.

I agree i am not a fan of 3D cartoons but there are some very impressive 3d movies and other things out there for instance final fantasy, and Beowulf to name a couple. but yes 2d cartoons have a certain quality that cant be replaced.

i agree with you,2D is looking better, maybe 3D is more close to reality, but i don't like it,i like 2D more than 3D because it looks so comfortable and beautiful.
