How can people be so heartless?

Animal Planet aired two shows today about animal rescue efforts during Katrina. Over 60,000 animals were abandoned with no food or water in flooded homes. Human beings who were supposed to care and love these animals just drove off to safety while their animals either died due to starvation, drowned or were shipped off to God only knows where, never to be seen or heard from again. My only question is how? How could ANYONE who claims to be an animal lover just drive off knowing that their animal is likely to die a violent death by drowning or a slow and painful death by starvation? How can anyone sleep at night knowing what they did? I know shelters did not accept pets, but was it so hard to find one that did? There were some stories about women sneaking in cats in their shirts, a man who packed a duffel bag full of dog food for his chihuahua he had stuffed in his jacket and a woman who snuck her 2 cockatiels in a Red Cross shelter in her bra. But for the others who left dogs tied to doors, cats locked in bathrooms, turtles on balconies and other animals just wandering the streets of a hurricane ravaged city, what were you thinking? Would you leave behind your kids if a shelter did not allow children? NO. You'd keep driving. Why can't you do the same for your animals?

I could never leave my 3 chihuahuas behind for any type of threat. I had to evacuate my home a few years ago for a hurricane warning and as my family are grown and do not live with me my first concern are my babies. I have a large crate and they all fit in it. I also have stickers in my doors in case of an emergency it say there are pets inside who also may need to be rescued.

In a abundant world, hunmen are always seem very self-giving and philanthropic. But once disaster happened, humen can not cover the self-serving nature anymore.I believe what the economist say:people are always self-serving.

I would blankly refuse to enter a shelter or go anywhere without my animals. Absolutely. I would camp outside if I had to. Animals rely on us humans for their lives. We're the selfish ones who domesticated them and wanted them as our pets so it is our responsibility to look after their needs. Domesticated animals can not look after themselves in our big cities, we need to step and and refuse to leave them behind. I know it would have been dificult and out of the way to bring some of the animals along but like I said, you need to stand up and say 'i'm not coming unless my animals come with me'.

Maybe because most people don't give birth to their pets. To even put someone's child on the same level with the family dog is just asinine. I do agree that it was horrible what happened to a lot of those animals because I watched the same special you did. But if it ever came down to saving a human life or the life of an animal there would be no question or hesitation in my mind that the human life was more important.

So is this where I attack you and get my friends to belittle you for your opinion as it's "ignorant" or whatever it was your friend called me, or do I take the high road and leave it alone?

I would like to know where in the topic it was said to make a choice between a human life or an animal life. It was simply a statment of people leaving there animal behind to face an uncertain future when they had a choice of doing something to protect them!!!!!!
