Travelling On your own

January 6, 2008 4:26am CST
Hi I hope you all had a good Christmas and New Year. So now we are in 2008 what plans have you got?? I've decided to try and beat my depression, also to do some travelling. It means doing it on my own. Which makes me alittle nervous. Have you ever travelled on your own? if you have please tell me your experiences both good and bad. Perhaps you know where to get a good deal when travelling on your own, i've found that alot of holiday companies charge so much more for travelling on your own. I look forward to hearing from you all.

I have travelled solo A LOT. It has it's pros and it's cons. As a girl it made me nervous because I worried over getting hurt or whatnot. Also, after I had done the days activites and was in the hotel at night in the wee hours it was boring. I'd sit and watch TV flicking channels thinking, I could be doing this at home.... sigh... Also, it's funner to have someone to share the experience with, to laugh with go out to lunch with etc... BUT it was good because then I could see and do exactly what I wanted when and how I wanted without having to go and see things or do things that someone else wanted that I might not be interested in. Also travelling with someone is more cost effective in the long run. I've come to realize that. LOL funny how you are travelling this year. So am I. Where are you going. I have yet to decide on my destination.

I don't have anyone to travel with. As it's been 7 years since i went last i just thought last year was a really bad year. So i thought i would try and be positive this year.

Oh I understand about not having anyone to travel with. I'm in the same boat. I've got lots of friends that WOULD go but they can't afford it and I don't mean that in any condescending catty way lol... it's just the truth. I used to travel a lone a lot. There are pros and cons as I've previously said. All in all travelling in any format is amazing. If you are looking at something to make you happier or to make a change or reboot your hardrive (so to speak haha yeah I'm a nerd) then a vaca. is the cure to what ails you. Trust me you will never regret it well unless you forget your digital camera at home. That is the biggest necessity aside from money to have on a trip is a digital camera. I say this because you don't need to carry around loads of film and it captures scenes you could never hope to describe. I hope you have fun and let loose.

www.solotravel.org/solo-travel-books.htm I am an avid solo traveller. I have done it for years and years but now that I getting a little older I find it a bit cumbersome some time. Two years ago I travelled to Barcelona Spain. I was to meet up with a friend who lives there. As it happens he got sick and I only saw him the day I arrived and the day I left, but I had a nice hotel room with air conditioning. It was a bit hard to arrange all my sightseeing and I constantly seemed to order food that I did not like. In 2007 I travelled to Malta and I had a marvellous time. I arranged for some tours in Malta and Sicily. I met so many interesting people on these bus tours. Germans, Finns, Norwegians to sit with and chat with, but at the end of the day I got dropped off at my hotel, could put up my feet in my room, eat in the dining room and go for a stroll along the promenade. The trouble with solo travel is that you have to pay so much in some places for the single supplement, but I will do it as long as I can afford it. If you are doing this for the first time I would recommend I would recommend you read up on solo travel. I gave you a website listed above. Good luck and may you have many adventures, but always be extremely careful because you are more vulnerable.

Thanks for that, I've looked into solo holidays but they are so expensive, i've been looking at just doing a package holiday, i want to go to egypt and although i've been there still not sure it's a good place to go on my own. When your away do you find it easy to talk to people on your own?

I don't find it particularly easy to talk to strangers but it seems to happen. I also always have a book with me. If you are booking a package tour find out if guided tours in Egypt are included in it or is it just aifare, hotel and meals. I would also find out about the safety of the hotel. In Egypt I really would not wander about by myself. So if no guided tours are included find out if you can book some while you are there and how much they cost, are you being picked up and delievered to the hotel. Best wishes

I haven't tried travelling alone, I guess I won't feel the fun of it. Why don't you try going to friendly places, like Philippines, Thailand, Hongkong or on some parts of Asia. I've seen more tourists go there, since it's easy to communicate at and they offer less expensive packages compared to places from Europe and other parts of the Americas.

To be honest if i want to travel i don't have much choice, i have nobody to go on holiday with. MY friends are all in relationships and i don't really fancy going with my mum any more. So if i don't go on my own i will never have a holiday, it's been 7 years since i've had a holiday as it is.

I love travelling on my own! I backpacked thru Europe in college and think it was the most libersting thing I have ever done. I pushed the limits of understanding myself and the cultures I visited. I made a few friends in each place and learned to listen to my instincts. I really do not think it matters where you go. Just open your mind and be ready for an adventure! If it makes you feel safer, travel with a group. Lots of churches and universities plan trips throughout the year.

I went on a three week bus tour on my own some years ago, and to be honest I think I had the best time of everyone, most people were teamed up, couples and friends and over the three weeks a few of the twosomes had arguments and on several occasions I asked if the spare bed in my room could be used, in various towns we had options to what we wanted to do, i did what I wanted and didn't have to compromise with anyone, I had a great time, I hope you do too...
