bill collectors

Anyone have any idea how to stop bill collectors? I plan on paying my bills it is just that I am out of work and have been having difficulty finding a job. My husband is disabled and has only a limited income coming in which pays for rent and utilities. We received 10 calls from the same collector today and I consider that harassment. Any suggestions? Christine

If I were you I just wouldn't answer the phone. They are as bad as telemarketers. If you're looking to make some extra cash (by no means enough to replace a job but maybe pay some bills) I would check out swatcash if I were you since you're in the US. If you're interested go to the website at my profile below my name & Payton's pic. Sign up w/ swat and I can show you some easy ways to earn some extra money.

I sent you a private message. My lot doesn't like referral links in discussions it seems like. PS- welcome to my lot, I just realized you're a new member. Give it a few days and you'll have no trouble navigating around.

Are you talking to them or never answering the phone at all? We used to get calls from a different agencies as an ex family member used us as a referral (unknown to us) and not answering just seems to make them call more. You can send them something in writing telling them to stop calling you and they are supposed to stop - so get there name and address and send a registered letter so you have proof. You do have rights so if they are calling at all hours of the day or using profanity, tell them you know your rights and will seek an attorney for harrassement. Also you can ask at the beginning of the conversastion if they will allow you to tape the conversation and many of them will hang up but the truly legit ones should be ok with it. There is the debt Collection Practices Act so look on the internet and be informed for when they call. Everyone goes through tough times, just tell them the truth and even if you can just send them $10 on a regular basis, most will see you are trying and maybe it will help.

I was having the same problems. i made attempts at asking them to reduce my interest and my monthly minimums. Some complied, some required me to close the account as in cut up the credit card, and some refused. I also found out that if they say they are recording the call say ok and then say "For the record, you no longer have my permission to use my phone number to contact me." and then hang-up. I did this with several creditors and two never called again. I just get statements in the mail and reminders. One even sends 'Gentle Reminder' cards that say amount due and date due with an address and 'Did you Forget' on the front. I don't mind them at all compared to those phone calls. Once you make an agreement even if the payment will only be 1 day late, call and let them know. It does help. I will pray that you find a good job soon and that these creditors be more understanding with you.
