Sigh!! Well we all now that with warmth comes thawing and or melting. I started a discussion about the ice jams on my roof a week ago or so. Now it's been warm & a lot has melted around here in Minnesota. You'd think with it this warm the ice jams would melt. Well all but a couple have melted. This is the huge one. It's about a foot thick and maybe a foot long. It's in the corner of my house out back. It had melted but that just caused the water to build up behind it making it larger as it reforze. So now I am going to be setting salty panty hose on it this weekend or sooner to aid in the melting. So far I haven't seen any water damage in the house at all from any of these ice jams so I am doing okay with my process so far. What do you do for ice dams on your house? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Ice jams aren't caused from gutters etc. I bet you have them you just don't know it. They form above the gutters not in them. HAHAHAHA!! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Gutter caps - Best I could do with a pic of it. Prevents debris flowing into the gutters and ice forming near the roof edge/on the gutters.
The gutter caps extend roughly 5" onto the roof, tucked under the 2nd layer of shingles so no water can go under the roof edge or the eaves, preventing ice dams. If I have them, then they form higher up on the roof cause I never have ice jams near the edge. Eesh! I really need to clean my soffits and siding come spring.

Grandpa Bob I want to know if you are going to be in the pantyhose when you put them on the ice jams? LOL Here in Central CA we do not have anything like ice jams. We did have a horrible freeze last February and lost most of the orange crop. This year the orange crops look good for the local farmers. (we I mean the local farmers my hubby and I do not have oranges.)

So far I don't have any, have you considered a roof rake as a preventative measure? I have never heard of your method before but I guess it would work. Now what is your favorite panty hose for this? Is there a particular color you like?

We have only had that happen once or twice with our roof. I didn't know they were called ice jams. Anyhow, my husband does basically the same thing you do. He has to crawl up the t.v. antenna and put that ice melt stuff on there. We have been lucky and haven't had any leaks from it. Good Luck!~D
