What is the best time to move out of the nest? Many people will spend more than half of their life living with their parents. Of course many stay through school, but when the children are out making their own money and doing their own thing should they get their own place?

i moved out at the age of 19, but it was my own choice, i wanted the freedom of being ndependant! i think this day and age it is very expensive for young people to afford their own home and that is why they stay with the parents. Also im finding that i notice a lot more parents not letting their children grow up these days xxx

I also moved out at 19, and yes it is definately difficult to pay all the expenses. Yes, it is sad as well that the more you listen to the news you hear about parents killing their children! So sad. But my thought is why children choose to live with their parents into their 30s and drive lavish cars and don't feel they need to pay bills becuase it's their parents house. What are your thoughts on people like that?

im not sure hun, maybe the parents let them get away with it because they dont want them to leave, the children will struggle in the long run though as when they do eventually move out, they will have no appreciation of the value of money or wht it is like to be independant! They will probably have no idea how to even do the smallest chores! My parents made me contribute to the rent as soon as i started working at 17 and i moved out knowing full well about bills rent and the basic cost of living in the real world! I am thankful to them that they didnt mollycoddle me!

Mollycoddle.. thats definately a new word to my dictionary! I like that as a decription. Sorry I didn't reply a long time ago, e-mail notification didn't come in. I love being independent, I don't think I would ever give it up if I had the choice. Thanks again for your input.

I think people should be allowed sufficient time to finish college (if they go) and start a career before their parents expect them to move out, which would be around the age range of 22-24, depending on what they went to school for. If they decided not to attend college, I would say 20 or 21, because they have then had 2 or 3 years after high school to figure out what they want to do with themselves, save money, and be financially independent. It's a shame it doesn't always work that way though...

I totally agree with you on that, I was one of the fortunate children able to do that. It just upsets me to see late 20s early 30s "children" living with their parents driving fancy cars and taking trips...and their parents struggling to pay the bills. People like that need to grow up and move on their own, or atleast shoot some money towards the bills!
