My friend its the level of your category, this is where you find your rating. You can make it high by creating new discussion under that category. Also by replying others discussion under the category you wanted to levelup.

Thats sounds very good to me. I will follow this from now on. I wan under the impression that the star is just a reference for the active members. I still wonder what is the logic behind the numbers increasing and decreasing.

The star next to your name is your rating or your mylot reputation. There are three boxes by all of your posts + - and ! to turn you in for abuse.
The more postivies people give you the higher your star will be the more negatives the lower your star will be.
The highest ranking you can get is a blue 10 the lowest is a 1 I don't know what color it is as I have only seen a person have a 1 once.
If you have internet explorer you can also put your cursor on the star to see your exact rating like mine is 98/100.
