I am not completely sure what you mean by "systems developer". I think of my self as a software engineer or programmer. I have no say over the network infrastructure, limited say on the database and my input on hardware beyond "a VM will be fine" or "it needs dedicated hardware, two instances of". So I don’t really touch the "system". That said I lead the development of many a project, and that involved getting the requirements together, specifying hardware requirements and developing the set of applications that made up "the system". So to answer the question in the title - maybe. :) And I guess that question one depends on if you consider what I do Systems Developer or just a programmer. I can not go into details over my project work, but the last really big project basically it took data from one source, mangled it and gave it to a different source. It also handled things like data that had already been received being restricted. As to if it was successful, it over ran a little, the restrictions stuff was a real pain (it involved editing PDFs) but luckily the third party responsible for the data it was importing also overran. The part of the system I worked as per specs on go-live, alas the thing I was feeding the data did not. Also it was discovered the specs were ever so slightly wrong. Go-live + 1 and the system that feeds the bit I wrote when horribly wrong. Go-live + 7 and a new version with the revised specs were live, but some bugs were still the system I feed. The caused production to distrust the feed. Now after a year it has stabilised, only a few bugs are open against it. So it was a success.
