why is dial up so slow????

I live in an area that only had dial up and not high speed and any big files take for ever to download. Trying to watch a movie today and realize that it will only download 2 seconds of each frame if the movie. Do you have any idea how long that takes. Firefox is slow too eventhough they try and say that it is faster its not. Any ideas anyone to improve this slow dial up connection?? OH, i'm using earthlink.net and there are only 2 access numbers for the location that i live in that is a bummer right.
