I have sculpted several figurines/dolls. I would have to say the books by Maureen Carlson have been the most helpful to me. Of course, there are numerous tutorials online, and one of my friends has a website with many! Go to www.norajean.com, and you will find all sorts of tutorials on not only sculpting, but making canes, jewelry, and just about anything else you can imagine! About the type of clay to use, I prefer Kato. The Sculpey was far too soft for this type of work, but that's really the only other type I've tried. Although, if you have a soft clay, you can firm it up a bit by "leaching" it. That means, rolling it out, and placing it between two sheets of paper, then placing that between two books, or something heavy. You might have to change paper a few times, but that will pull out the excess oils, so your clay will be firmer and easier to work with in detailed situations. My number one tip for a beginner is, don't be afraid of failing. Just play with your clay. Try to sculpt, and if it comes out wrong, just squish it up, and try again! No one makes the wonderful things you referred to on their first try, so practice, practice, practice! And, feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Good luck to you!

I have just started to work with polymer clay (fimo). I am making a line of figurines called Lil Sweet Tots (I already copyrighted my name and everything) to add to my website (www.sweetdesigninc.com). I haven't done any dolls yet though. I am mainly going to be doing figurines. I started another discusion about fimo clay sculpting and it has a pic of one of my unfinished pieces. I am really finding them fun and love to sit and think of the next one I will make.

I have sculpted 3 dollies they are not anything like the fairies you are talking of but just cute little dollies. I have them on my website. I am starting to work on a set of fairies now. Will let you know how that works out. Oh you might want to check out your local library to see if they have this book that might help you... How To Make Clay Characters by Maureen Carlson

Wow those are wonderful. I just got into making the dolls myself. I saw it on a show called that's clever on HGTV. http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_clay_figures/article/0,1789,HGTV_3237_4206336,00.html It gives detailed intructions on how the sculptures were made. I know that she uses prosculpt. Good luck. I would love to see you work when you get finished.
