online friends - a boon or bane ??

Most of the teenagers who access the internet are fond of chatting on net.well,i feel about 70 % of teenagers who access net are engaged in chatting with some one or the other, do you feel or think this is a good behaviour/culture ?? well,we all love making friends.. but making friends via the net i dont think is good way. what do you people feel about it.. ?? how do you judge if the user is good or bad ?? what are the criteria under which you would accept him/her as a friend?? when i chat,i have often heard people telling i "chat for timepass!! " and make friends for" timepass".. what do you think is the actual meaning of it.. ?? However,i feel friends whom you meet and get to know about them by living with them(in the sense,like school,college or educational places or others.. ) are actually far better than making friends online because you often cant completely believe the other person ( and sometimes it might be the truth as well) .. so what you think about this?? have you ever made such online friendship?? and if you dont mind,can you tell the time span of your friendship or the other way,any problems you have felt in such a friendship..??
