Freak "Accident" Has Made Me Immobile For A While...

Dumb Blonde - Oooops, I did it again...

Well, I've been and done it good and proper now, so I just thought I'd let you all know why my time spent in Mylot, or indeed on the computer, will be short, and few. I know some of you worry about me, but I'll be fine... I just wanted you to know why I'm not around too much. A stupid thing happened when I came home from work last night. I was plodding up the stairs, with aching feet and got to within a couple of stairs from the top when there was this resounding clonk in my knee, the bottom of my leg feeling as though it had separated from beneath the knee in a sideways direction, and tremendous pain, shot through my leg. I couldn't move... just yelled and ended up in tears from the pain. Eventually, I managed to crawl on my three good limbs, to my typist chair, and haul myself up onto that, somehow. The pain was almost unbearable. Since then, I have been scooting around the flat on my typist chair, and sliding from there to various needed places, like bed and the bathroom. I have taken some strong painkillers and the rest seems to be doing me good, but I can't sit at the computer for too long. I have been flexing my foot and twisting my leg as far as I can, in exercise, and it does appear to be settling down now. There is no bruising or swelling... just the odd pain. I can't put even the slightest bit of weight on it at the moment, so I think I've torn my ligaments. There's no way I can get out of the flat to see a doctor, and I don't think it's really an ambulance case, so I'm going to give it a week and see how it goes. Meanwhile, I'm getting by with the occasional help of neighbours and family. So there you have it... I'll be around occasionally but not for too long at a time. Maybe I am quite the dumb blonde after all!:)

Yes, I'll continue to exercise and gradually use it for more, using a little more pressure at a time. I had a bit of a set-back in bed last night.. was managing to lie on my side, but when I tried to lift my right foot from the mattress, it hurt, so I ended up sleeping on my back. lol. Take care. xxx

I can't have pulled it out, my friend, because there are no lumps or bumps, no swellings, and I can press all around it without it hurting. It's gradually getting better, with rest and graduated exercise... thanks for the heat/ice treatment tip... that's very helpful. Brightest Blessings. xxx

Aw Darkwing, I'm so sorry this has happened to you. I've been so involved with my own problems, I've just got around to reading yours. I'm very sorry, shame on me. I will read your other discussions now to see if you're doing ok, which I caught a few titles and it sounds like you are, Thank Goodness.

Hey! No matter, my friend. We all have our problems, and although we are aware of others', and want to be there for them, we do have to look after ourselves primarily. Yes, I'm pleased with my progress... my main worry was that I would never walk again, at least without aid, but I've come through it, and my determination was probably a great deal to do with the problems of others. There are people worse off than me... I know that, and I have to divide my time, but if I'm not mobile, there is little I can do to help them. I have to show them that there is always a way out of the dark! Brightest Blessings. xx

My goodness. I agree with several of the other posters. You need to see a doctor very soon to have this looked at. Get well soon and elevate the leg to see if that helps.

Thank you Royal, for your wishes. With the national health system in this country, in the state that it is at the moment, there's no way I could expect a visit. Our local hospital is being downsized, ready to be turned into a cottage hospital and we have to be transported fourteen miles by ambulance to the nearest hospital, which is now extremely busy. I couldn't get down the stairs to visit the doctor, so I took it on myself to do what I felt was the best thing to at least get me back to a state where I could get downstairs and go visit my GP, but, progress has been so good, that I no longer feel a need. :) Thank you for your concern and advice, which were much appreciated. It's nice to be able to talk to understanding friends at times like this. I was confined to my upstairs flat, with little mobility and just my next door neighbour at the end of the phone. That time was depressing and I knew I had to get the use of my leg back before it became weak and useless. Brightest Blessings. x

Awwww no that doesn't sound too good Darkwing. I hope you are going to be ok. Is there anyway for a doctor to come out to you? I hope you feel better soon. Take care!

I very much doubt my doctor would come out, so I haven't tried to call him. I'm getting there with rest and gentle exercise, and the pain has subsided a lot. I can touch and press my knee and leg and there's no pain or soreness there... it's just when I put too much pressure on it, or turn it awkwardly that it hurts. Brightest Blessings.

Thank you, Kay. I'm glad to see you in here. :) It seems to be getting better, slowly. I'm just taking one day at a time, and trying gentle exercises to keep it moving. I don't want the muscles to go to sleep! Brightest Blessings, love and hugs. xxx

You need to see the doctor. If you have completely torn the ligament loose it will not heal on its own. It will have to be tacked back in place surgically. I did this and had to have it sewn back in place. If you have torn it loose and you wait too long the ligament or tendon will shorten and they will not be able to repair it. I almost waited too long too. I had no insurance and figured I would just tough it out. How bad could it be? Well if you can never walk on that leg again it will be real bad! Have it looked at by a competent MD. NOW! Shalom~Adoniah

I appreciate your words, my friend, but just now, I can't get out of the flat. I will call the doctor in eventually, if necessary, but the way our health system is at the moment, I doubt he'll be very pleased about coming out to me. He's more interested in his private patients, I'm afraid. So, I'm going to rest it fully apart from the necessary visits to the bathroom and such, for a few days and see how it goes. If I can get a little use out of it, so that I can get down the stairs, then I'll get an appointment, but chances are, that'll take at least three to four days. So, my hands are tied, somewhat right now. Brightest Blessings.

Thank you Lingli. Yes, it was really scary at the time, and the pain was excrutiating, but I'm getting better with lots of rest and graduated exercise. I can't get down the stairs to the street, so as to go to the doctors, family member or not. There are nine stairs down from my flat to the door, three steps from the door to a sloping path and then, three more steps to the street. So, that's right out at the moment. The pain is subsiding though and I'm keeping the leg going, so let's hope it's not too much longer before I can get down to the fresh air. lol. Brightest Blessings. x

Yes, I'm fine, I just can't get out anywhere, and no, I doubt the doctor would even entertain coming out to me. For one, he's too busy with his private clinic and another, the last time I had an injury like this, I was told to rest it and put a bag of frozen peas on it. So, I'm doing things the best way I know how. Lots of rest, flexing my foot in a circular and sideways motion in bed, bending and stretching it... can't get it straight yet, without pain, but getting there. Yesterday, I started using it to help push the chair around... not too much pressure but just enough to keep it active, and I can also stand for a few minutes to cook, or make a cup of tea. Of course, most of the weight is on the other leg, so can't stand too long; just balancing on the injured one, and occasionally, putting as much pressure as I can on it, until I feel pain, when I stop and sit back down in the chair. That all seems to be working. Don't want to have to see the Physio and have to learn to walk again afterwards, so keeping it mobile. Take care... love and hugs. xxxx By the way... you can't hog the limelight all the time... it's my turn sometimes! ha ha ha ha ha

Ouch, my bad knee is hurting in sympathy. I do wonder how or why yu just suddenly had ligaments tear from climbing upstairs. I am half the world away, or I would come help you out. I had a knee decide to no longer be a functioning part of my anatomy for awhile, and I know it is no fun. Do figure out how to get it seen if it does not seem to get better.

Yes, I will try to monitor progress on it. I'm going to rest up for a few days... maybe a week, and see how it goes. I don't feel the pain unless I try to roll over on one side, bend it too much or put pressure on it. I can balance by using my heel only, but no way can I walk, or get down the stairs. I'm remaining calm all the while there's no constant pain. There's no swelling, no sign of it having come out of place and no bruising that I can see, and I can touch all parts of my knee and leg without too much discomfort, so fingers crossed, it's not as bad as it sounded. My dodgy knee is taking a bit of a bashing as I use that leg to scoot my chair round the flat, and to take most of my weight whilst I stand to transfer from one place to another, but that's not a great problem. Thank you for your concern, my friend, and Brightest Blessings.

Eek that sounds scary! It's horrible when you can't get to the doctor too! Sorry to hear that you're having such a rough time, and I hope you get feeling better soon. Thanks for letting us know... I'll keep you in my thoughts and mention you in my next healing ritual. (Seeing as I do them practically every day, for one reason or another.)

Awww my dear friend I am sending prayers and positive energies your way! I feel I want to light a candle for me as you have so often done for me but I have no special ones - will a nice scented one work as well do you think? It sounds as though you are in real pain - could you not get your drs to pay a home visit tomorrow if for no other reason than to make sure that you have done nothing worse (although a torn ligament is bad enough)? Have you tried strapping it with a bandage just to give a bit of support and relief from the pain? Heat and cold packs alternately might help too. Wish I could do more and I hope that the pain subsides soon! xxx

Awww, thank you Mummymo for the thought. A white candle reflects all colours, so is fine. The pain is subsiding quite a bit now. It was like toothache for a couple of days and drove me mad, but the rest and gentle flexing and exercise is gradually helping to heal it seems. I don't think it's something really bad because there are no unusual lumps, swelling or bruising and the pain isn't actually in my knee. There is no water on the knee... in fact, the knee is fine, it's the top of the calf muscle and around the side of my leg which gives pain. I'm gradually adding a little more pressure and exercise each day, and it appears to be doing the trick, together with the rest. Fingers crossed! :) Brightest Blessings, my dear friend. xxxx

OMG...that sounds so horrible, not to mention painful as hell. How did you manage to pop your knee, was it from the result of an old injury or something? Try to use a cold sage compress...boil up water maybe about two or three cups, turn off the heat and sprinkle in about four or five tablespoons of rubbed sage...let steep...then with a cheesecloth or paper towel put in strainer to strain the infusion into a bowl...place that in the fridge to let it get cold ..then once cold take a paper towel and saturate it with the infusion and place on the area...I'm using that for my ankles and feet as I'm still having my pain problem as well...if anything it does feel good to use the sage solution....and I'll be praying for you that you feel better soon

Oh, thank you, Pye. I've only just seen your comment about the Sage, but I will certainly try it. It beats the doctors' instructions of frozen peas, lolol. The pain is gradually going away, with gentle exercise, and rest, but I believe wholeheartedly in herbs, as you know, and I'm going to try this. Brightest Blessings. x

Hi Darkwing! Oh, I am really sorry to hear that. I hope it is nothing really, really serious. I just hope that you will get better soon. But I am still worried and hope that you can see a doctor right away for an accurate diagnosis of the sprained or torn ligament. I just hope that you will get better really, really soon. Take care and please get well soon. :)
