Me and my son are traveling today on a ferry and we're heading to another town that we won't get to until tomarrow. I can't believe I got a free wireless connection anywhere on this boat. Has anyone else tried this? you know get on your laptop and find out you get internet even though there are no towns around you at all. I love this I've emailed all my family to tell them and know I am going to watch a movie online after this.

I know you can use wifi or wireless connection if you are within the vicinity of an establishment or a user with a wireless broadband connection. Although I've heard that some laptop owners in the city can use this wireless connection, I have not tried it myself. One of your responders here maybe correct that one of the passengers in the ferry or the ferry itself have a wireless broadband connection so you were able to use the wifi in your laptop.

I guess some how somehow the ferry must had a wifi internet on the ship cause It was anywhere on the boat I was. I just think that was awesome being on the net out there in the middle of no where. I took my mac and it picked up the signal right away. but the connection was slow so I couldn't watch any tv online. It was sorta fast in the beginning but as we got farther it seemed more like dial up. so by that time the websites weren't even loading.

I don't think there are any wifi point along the river that your ferry is going to. But I guess your ferry operator may have a wireless broadband connection, or a co-passenger of yours have it. Here in my country, we have this portable wireless internet connection. Some of the telco even provide the convience in an USB internet connection device. Yes, all you need to do is just to plug into your USB port and you are ready to be online. It's unlimited for a fixed fee every month.

ok now thats interesting. I was told we we're traveling in the Inside passage of Alaska. but like I said there were no towns in sight. just really bad snowy weather blowing. I just didn't see how it was possible to get internet out there.

I don't much about it. but all I know is I had internet and only for a few hours I had a little faster than dial up and then later that day it was all dial up speed. i don't know how or why I got internet. I am no longer on the ferry now. I am in the town and in my new apartment. I'll do some research on why I had internet on the fetry.
