I try very hard to limit how much and what kind tv my son watches. He is only 3 and I don't want him to grow up to be a couch potato. I let him two hours a day, although to be perfectly honest, on days when I am really really busy, I let him watch more. I feel bad about that..like I am using the tv as a babysitter and I feel that isn't fair to him. I also try to make sure he watches stuff that just has education value, such as sesame street. He just looooooves Elmo...to tell the truth I do too LOL. Anyway, I was just wondering what your opinion is of how much tv is too much. How much do you let your kids watch?

I only allow my kids to watch tv when they have nothing to do. My school age kid could only watch tv if she is already done with her homeworks. And she watch for one to two hours only. I also train her to sleep early and not spend too much time on the evening watching tv.

I think that it depends on your child how much TV you let them watch. If they don't sit there all day then they should be able to watch however long they want, because they're not constantly sitting there. If they are kids that just sit there all day long, then you should restrict their TV time, give them an incentive to want to do something else, because if you are harsh about it, they will rebel, and become hard to manage. Disciplining and making rules are all about manipulating your children into believing that it's what they want to do, not something that they have to do. If you can make things fun and exciting for them, they will be better kids.

For my kids it is too much if they don't move off the couch at all for more then an hour. The TV is always on in our house and it has always been that way. My kids can watch whatever they want for how ever long as long as they are up and moving around and doing other stuff, too. They usually watch a half hour then go play or they are coloring while watching or whatever. The only time I ever limited it was when I realized my oldest daughter was just sitting in front of the TV for hours on end, only moving to use the bathroom. So the TV went off for a month (they got an hour in the morning, half hour to an hour at lunch and maybe some at dinner time). They don't always watch educational stuff either. I think that stuff is boring and TV should be about fun, too. I don't restrict them much. They watch pretty much whatever they want. Usually it is the Disney channel or Nickelodeon. There are movies they like, too. They are 7, 6 and 5. Even my almost 2yo learned that if she turns the TV on in the morning cartoons will be on because the satellite automatically tunes to Noggin in the morning. She'll turn it on and watch while I'm doing dishes. She just started watching recently.

Each to their own on this topic :) My daughter loves TV & will watch it all day if i let her but then again, if the TV is going all day, she'll usually only watch the parts that get her attention & when they're over, she'll go off & play with her toys, or we'll go outside & play. I don't think TV is as bad as people say it is, especially when it comes to young children. As long as the children get to do things like playing & running around, as well as eating properly & socialising, then it's really not an issue for me!

i would say 1-2 hrs per day, not more. Young kids pick up a lot from TV, especially nowadays. Many of the kids cartoons show forms of violence that are not suitable for young children.
