My husband worked in the gaming industry for 7 years. The stupid thing is, that PS3 sat on a shelf in a warehouse for a while. WHile it was collecting dust on a shelp, Playstation came up with some upgrades, and then some more. So, when you buy it, and hook it up, voila, their are critical updates. The same thing happened to us when we hooked up our Wii. Its a pain, but hey, at least the updates are free...

well i can understand it if that is the case. but the funny thing is, i didn't have my ps3 hooked up to internet or anything. the update was in it already, but i still had to wait 10 minutes while it loaded the thing. if it was already there, why did i have to do that. you know? the update was in the ps3 already, but not installed. what sense does that make?

hmmm it doesn't make much sense at all... Sounds to me like Sony is busy churning out the systems, but they aren't completing them all the way, which means that they are leaving the software to install after it is hooked up for the first time. Which if that is the case is a big problem, because they have no visual control over how the upgrades are working. I swear, the video game industry will cut every corner that they can....

well quilted, i do appreciate your input. its nice to know i just bought a $500 work in progress. does that mean that since i finished the job for them, i should get paid? after all i am doing someone's job by finishing, so tehrefore technically someone's pay belongs to me for manhours put in. i'll round up, so they owe me an hour's pay. lol.

If you think thats bad, wait until you start to play some of the new games out there. At least unlike the 360 where it can only get upgrades online, the PS3 can get upgrades from brand new games alone. I guess that extra space in a Blu Ray disc is good for something :D especially when some of us cant afford high speed internet!

i personally dislike xbox all together. for teh simple fact that i don't like the controller configuration. so far the best configuration i've found is for the ps2 and 3. i just don't like xbox. never have, never will!
