I'm not sure what the star means but I noticed earlier that I had a red star with a 9 in it beside my name and wondered what it was for. I might have to go and check out the FAQ to find out ;)

apparently its your mylot reputation. If you hover you mouse over the star it will tell you what your reputation is :)

Stars are supposed to be your reputation here, if you happen to reach higher than eight (which is ten) then it means that you are rated positively more by other participants here.
Having an eight star for a starter is a good one, just keep on posting your way here and make them in good quality as always. To make it more understandable, do read the guidelines and follow them as you get more active here..
