i have often wondered what this phrase means as i grew older and recently i found out! as a kid i would hear adults use this term and thought it had something to do with the weather!! dumb me! now i know! to me fair weathered friends means if the going is good and there are no issues with the friendship everything is okay and you're okay in the eyes of your friend but look out if things crop up! then you find out who your real friends are. a friend recently pointed out with a list she sent me that fair weathered friends are ones that leave you if you loose a job need help then no where to be found, which is very true but recently i have had some serious family issues which i have shared with my "friend" over the yrs i have been away from my home state. all of a sudden she tells me i need to spend less time on computer emailing her and find a job plus she then tells me i have obsessive compulsive problems i need to work on!!! i was mortified and very upset we have supported each over the yrs thru thick and thin. she has been so supportive with me also and a guiding light as a friend. she made my dark days lighter also. when we were discussing family issues i as a friend brought to her attention that she had alot of potential with a masters in teaching to find a decent job after she insulted me re finding work in a depressed seasonal area where i now presently reside.i think i hit a nerve and she became hostile why she cant herself get out of her remote area and find decent work using the excuse she has to give her life up for care of her brothers. grown and older of course.i was heartbroken this morning when this happened and mortified by her comments. i was always lead to believe she was a friend true to the end guess not. so its left hanging re our friendship. this saddens me alot. it made for a nice valentines day too with husband having to work also.

I am sorry that you had to go through that today, or any day for that matter. She is probably still your friend but was trying to (i think) give you constructive criticism which my have gone astray if you were at all defensive to her. Give it some time and you will more than likely work this out if you are true friends ; ) I hope your Valentines Day is not all bad...tomorrow is another day. And remember you can control your own emotions...Choose Happiness regardless~Cheri
