~I am so tired of people and how they care for there animals. I recently aquired an Iguana. The people who had her didnt care for her right. There house went up for sheriff sale and they have to move. So that means they have to get rid of some pets. I decided to Take the iguana because it need the most Help. ~She had a big enough tank but that was about it. She had rocks for beding which is NOT GOOD. Iguanas tend to try to eat anything smaller than there mouth. If She eats a rock it will become inpacted in her and she can die. She didnt have the right Light bulbs in her tank. They were using house light bulbs. Her tank was at 70 degrees and should be 85 or more! The tank hadnt been claned in so long that I have to dig at the rocks to get them unstuck! GROSS!! An Iguanas tank needs to be clean for them to be happy and healthy. She is black in color because she is unhappy and not getting the right things. They didnt even take her out of her tank. It just upsets me. ~She has been Here almost a week and Is already doing much better. Her color has lightened up alot. I Cleaned her Tank with Bleach and HOT water to get the filth out. I lined it with News paper. I went and bought the right light bulbs which cost 40$ for both. I wouldnt have cared if they cost 100$ She NEEDED Them. Her tank has warmed up from 70 to 84 degrees. She is more active now and she is going to the bathroom finaly. We take her out everyday and hold her. She is Super nice. She dosent try to bite or tail whip ya. I really think she will gain some weight and be much happier here. Atleast I hope so. ~They thought she was a boy but shes not I checked. So were going to change her name from Bubba to Moser.{all our pets have car part names, Piston, Spark Plug and Hemi, husbands a mechanic. Moser is a company that makes axles} ~I get so annoyed with people when they dont care for an animal the right way. If you dont know how read up on it, get on the internet, ask the pet store people, something or dont get the pet!! Its that simple. Sometimes I want to put them in a tank with no food, crawling in there own filth. Maybe then they would care for there pet the right way! ~Thanx for listening...I really need to get that out. Here is a Picture of her.

Hi Copper,...awwwww, poor, poor little Moser. I'm so very happy to hear YOU acquired her, and now I know she will be in the best of care. You are totally right about people caring for pets, all they need to do is ask or read. And the pets, oh, how they suffer for this. I remember years ago when I cleaned apartments, these people were evicted and left the place completely trashed. Amongst the destruction, were several little animals plus fish. It was disgusting. There was a baby Iquana that I took and didn't know the first thing about them, but I do like the little buggers. I was going to keep him/her, and for sure, would have asked a million questions on their care. But, one of the Maintenance men asked if he could have him/her because he already had another one and knew how to care for them. So he took her, and I was just as happy. He was a very nice guy so it was fine with me. I found homes for the rest of the little animals.........so very sad isn't it?

What method did you have her sexed by? I had an iggy "probed" and later found this male was a female when she released a clutch of (non-fertile) eggs. Since she probably is a female & she's had such poor care up until now, try to get her exposed to real sunlight when the weather permits it too. The iggy mentioned above, who was in a sorry state when she came to me went into convulsions & eventually passed away after laying those eggs. She was so calcium deprived, her body couldn't handle making eggs. And like birds some reptiles will produce eggs even when they have never been around a male.

I know the bumps you mean- it's more often than not an accurate way of determining (in an adult iguana) but it's been my experience that it's not always. Usually females don't have any or the ones they have are uniformed & very small, but sometimes males can be under-developed (especially when they haven't had proper care) and look female. Probing can be accurate (males have longer 'tunnels' than females) but sometimes the person probing doesn't know what they're doing. With iguanas sometimes you can tell looking at them- males tend to be sleeker looking and females tend to be heavier and not as pretty, but again poor care can make that not apply and specimens from different origins can look much different too. Yours probably is a female as you've stated, and if you were mistaken it wouldn't make any real difference any way. It's when they're thought to be male, and the owners are slack about providing a good diet & sunlight- if it turns out that a male is actually a female is when people have problems.

I agree. I will feed her and give her what she needs. Weather they are male or female they still need the proper lighting and calcium in there diet. Even since yesterday her head has gotten lighter in color. I think the clean tank, new lights, and good food are helping her. Question for you..you seem to know what your talking about. Why does her poop look like an egg white? Its that clearish liquid with a small white chunk in the middle..which is the pee I thought. Shouldnt she have solid poop? Just curiouse. Thanx

Thank you for the compliments. I've been a fan of herps for awhile now & at one time owned an exotic pet store. Since reptiles poop & pee out of the same single opening, watery waste isn't abnormal. You should see at least a little bit of mass to it, but if the rest is liquid that's OK. The white is calcium- it could be no big deal, it could be that you're giving her a little too much, or it could be that what you're giving her isn't being absorbed by her body. Are you giving her a calcium supplement along with calcium foods? Greens like kale, collards & mustard greens are pretty high in calcium on their own- if you're feeding her those, unless she has rubbery bones I'd skip the supplement or only use it a few times a month. If she won't eat those foods yet- sometimes if they've been fed less nutrious foods it's hard to convert them back to the good stuff, I'd supplement a couple times a week while continuing to try to switch her diet. I know you said you paid a lot for her bulbs, are any of them flouresent tubes? Honestly those are the only ones worth what they charge- a good full spectrum tube light for calcium absorbtion & you could use a $1 GE bulb for heat. If you don't have FS lighting, get her exposed to sunlight. If she's always pooping tons of white stuff it's either she's getting too much or she's not absorbing any. If it's just occasional or not a lot then I wouldn't stress it.

Kudos for rescuing her! It seems like she is looking a lot better as far as getting her color back goes. I don't understand why people get pets like these if they know they aren't going to be able to take care of them. I've always wanted to be one to own an exotic pet of some sort. I'm pretty partial to birds, and hope to own one someday. Right now, I know my living situation would not work, so i don't own one. I'm a full time college student who lives in the dorms as a Resident Assistant. The only animals that we are allowed to have in the dorms are fish, and I have a small 10 gallon tank in my room with a couple gouramis and danios. It's a nice colorful addition to the room, that's for sure. I know that unless I can take care of a pet and give it a stable home, i'm not going to buy one.

Im glad to here that you know you cant take care of a pet so you dont have one!! Kudos to you!! I wish more people would think like you. As far as Moser goes she is doing tons better now. She is very active and eats like its going out of style! LOL! She is such a friendly girl and has recently been molting/shedding her skin. Her color is getting better although her head is still part black. I think it might always be that way because she was malnurished. Im just glad she is eating well and seems to be very happy here. She always lifts her head and closes her eyes when we walk by her tank. Its like Pet me please...I love you for saving me. LOL! ~May The Kisses Of An Angel Cover And Protect You Always~ Copper
