Vintage Dressing Help: Hat Pins!

I love the vintage look of the 30s, 40s, and 50s so at a vintage fashion fair recently it was love at first sight when I found a vintage black feather hat, very Audrey Hepburn style. I purchased it and got a hat pin to go with it. There's only one problem: I have no idea how to use the hat pin! How do you use them to secure your hat? Has anyone got any experience with this that they could help me? I'm a tad worried about stabbing myself in the head!

Make sure you enter the pin sideways.
Try and catch some hair to hold the hat in one position.
You will eventually get used to it.
