A sad situation occurred recently with some mail my mother sent out to me. It never arrived from her home in Oakville, Ontario (part of the GTA) to my home in London, Ontario. For Valentine's Day, my mum bought a card for my sons and I, and put in it, a $50 gift card for "East Side Mario's". She also sent out a birthday card to each of my twin sons, with a $10 McDonald's gift card in each. Three separate envelopes, each having double the stamps on them just in case. They were all properly addressed, stamped, and return addressed. And yet after 2 weeks, they never arrived. Today, she called Canada Post to voice her concern. She is in a new housing subdivision in Oakville, and within the past month, her mailbox was changed (they don't have direct door delivery, and must get their mail from an outdoor mailbox). She explained to them how this was the first time that she had used that mailbox to send out any mail, and that there has been no problem receiving mail. Within an hour of her phone call, she received another call from Canada Post Security, and found out that this was not the first incident of such a thing happening in her area. It seems that there is a theft problem, and that numerous complaints have been received from the community because mail sent out from those boxes has not always made it to their destinations. If it was just one letter that did not arrive, that could be shrugged off as a shame, and understood that "stuff happens", and it could very well have gotten lost. But to have 3 separate letters not arrive? That is absurd! It saddens me greatly that there are people out there who have no respect for the law, and have no conscience, as they are willing to literally take away from little kids. It disgusts me actually. Hopefully these criminals will be found. Somehow they have access to these mailboxes. It would be very scary if it were found to be an inside job through some mail carriers. My gut says it is an outside job, but you just never know. So, do you know how safe your snail mail is? Have you ever had a letter go missing? Has mail you sent never arrived to its destination? Has someone sent you something you never received? Do you put trust in your local postal service? Do you think these people will get caught? How do you think they could be found?

For years I had a Post Office Box just because of that problem. I can no longer afford to keep a P.O. Box, so I have just told people to not send me anything of importance to my address. If they are going to send me anything, they send it to the post office Attn. Post Master. and I pick it up that way. They just email me the day they send it. That gives me 10 days to pick it up. This works out very well. We do something similar with UPS. I just pick it up at the local UPS station. Even though it is a felony here in the states to steal from a Post Box, it is very rare that anyone ever gets caught. No one should ever send gift cards in an envelope, because you can feel them through the envelope. The postman may have stolen them. Send them in a small box. It is worth it. Shalom~Adoniah

My mum has been sending me things like this for years, and the thought of having to change how she goes about it has not come up until now. Yes, the security person she spoke with on the phone mentioned that it is easy to feel for gift cards.

Tell her to try those "pillow" envelopes. The ones with bubble wrap in them. You cannot feel anything through them. Shalom

That's a good idea. But she won't be mailing anything in those post bins ever again. She'll just go to the actual post office, like she usually does.

Well that just sucks.... If the people are postal employees, which is probable, they will likely be caught, if it is someone who is breaking into the mailbox, not likely. I never really trust snail mail for anything of value, too many things have gotten lost in the mail for me.

Yes, yes it does suck. One of the amusing things about it to me, is that my mother was so convinced that "I" should be the one who shouldn't trust my neighbours, because according to her, "I" am the one who lives in a bad neighbourhood. HA! Funny thing is, "I" am not the one who now feels unsafe in her own home.

As of yet thats never happened to me...back in Canada though I NEVER put mail in my box to go out..I always went to a proper postbox or on occasion to the post office... Welcome to the GTA....Mind you I never figured Oakville was as bad as some of the other areas in GTA but I guess some ppl just have nothing better to do with their pathetic time :-/

I always put my mail in one of those locked mailboxes where I pick it up. I'm going to think twice about that now. It's a rather high end neighbourhood where my mum is, so it really comes as no surprise that criminals would target that area. People with money will mail out money, right? ;)

I find that scary, when banks send cards like that via regular mail.

Wow... I am sorry to hear that. :( Over here, the postal service is pretty much top-notch. We get our letter delivered by the next working day as long as you dump it in the collection box by 5pm. There *are* cases where letters have gone missing or were mis-delivered but they are the exception rather than the norm. And I must add that it is VERY rare for some mistakes to occur. They probably have less than 20 cases like this for the entire work year for the whole country (just my guess).

I've never experienced anything like this with the mail before. Normally, mail between my mum and I would arrive within 3 business days. So here in Canada, having mail go missing like that is the exception as well.

What a blow for your mother and for you and the family. We have a superb snail mail service where we live in the South of England, but my parents in Oxford have a hideous time. When the local workers aren't on strike they seem to delight in losing post. I have lost track of the number of times I have said "did you get the card", posted about 4 days previously, for the reply to be "no". Yet everything that they have ever sent here does arrive OK. They had one postman a year or so back who couldn't be bothered to deliver the mail so used to "store" it in his house. Must be places beginning with O - Oakville and Oxford. Perhaps they could be twinned?

It could be... "O" towns are BAD news. ;) A postman stealing the mail and storing it in his house? Wow! I don't recall hearing stories like that here, but I'm sure it's only because they haven't been caught yet. ;)

I think you should write a complaint to the postmaster general about this

Although the mail was addressed to me, the problem is not on my end, but on my mother's. They did ask if she had receipts of the gift card purchases, but I"m not sure if it is something they will reimburse due to the circumstances.

only if she can find the receipts. McDonald's rarely gives out receipts, and it was paid for by cash. As for the East Side Mario's gift card, there may be some hope there, because it was put on mastercard.

She can cancel the money on those cards though and put towards another card. You should have her see about doing that.

Thankfully I haven't had a letter go missing entirely but I have had mail delievered to the wrong address and a neighbor brought it over. That made me nervous because while most people would give it to the rightful owner, you know probably there are a few people that don't. I'm sorry about what happened with the stuff your Mom mailed.

I have had mail coming to me go to the wrong mailbox in my complex, and I have received mail in my box that was for a different unit number. In both cases, the mail was given to the correct recipient. Yes, I'm sorry too, that we didn't get those gift cards. Those were 2 meals I didn't have to cook for the boys and I. lol.
