Red eye is caused by the light from the flash actually entering the eye, and reflecting back out through the pupil. Most of the time in cameras with red eye reduction, it doesn't work automatically. A lot of cameras have a red eye reducing flash - the way it works is to fire the flash twice, once to make everyone's pupils contract, and again to actually take the picture. But it won't do anything if you haven't put it to that setting. On some cameras, while you're reviewing the pictures, there'll be options to edit and remove the red eye. Other ways around red eye are taking pictures in brighter areas, and having everyone not look straight into the camera. If your camera allows it, the separate flashes that attach to the top will also help prevent it.
