He is only a month old and has his first cold. I am a nervous wreck. The other day I rushed him to the emergency room because his one eye was pink and swollen shut and I paniced well I got there and they said it would be a 2 hour wait so my mother told me to bring him home and call the peditrician I should have been called him in the first place but this is my first kid and I was worried. So we put a warm wet cloth on his eye and now its better but the little guy is still stuffy and miserable. It kills me to see him miserable. To top it off I also have a cold. I bought a cool mist humidifer and run it constantly and I have been suctioning out his nose. This is nerve wracking. Any suggestions?

It is so hard not to panic when you are a new mum, the slightest cough, hiccup and you are a nervous wreck. I remember it well. He sounds like he has a cold bless him, and with him being so little there is not a lot you can do for him other than to make sure he drinks plenty, is he having water yet?, I used to give mine warm water sterilised first, or milk, dont overdress him, and just keep a close eye on him. I hope he gets better soon.

It is normal to be this worried, especially when they are so little. You may want to have him sleep propped up a little, since congestion hurts more when you are lying flat. My pediatrician suggested putting the infant carrier in the crib, and have him sleep in that. I know it's hard to do, but try to relax. He will get better soon. It's harder on you than it is on him. This is the first of many colds, so you'll gain some experience soon enough.
